air9 and shimano external bb spacer setup

I have an air9 alloy and am not sure how to set up the spacers with my xtr m980 external bearing bb.

Now the shell on the air9 is 73mm but the flanges on the inserts bring the width out to about 76mm.

The bb is designed for a 73mm shell with a 2.5mm spacer on the drive side.

So should I use the spacer or not?

If I use it the effective bb shell is wider than specified. If I don't it seems the crankset will be offset 2.5mm to the non-drive side (which is how I have it set up now, and does appear to be offset).

If it matters, I am running a 2x10 XTR crank. Just like you, I had alignment and chainline issues. Instead of using one 2.5 spacer, I used 2 on the drive side. I know this is off spec, but it cured both alignment and chainline issues.
