My frame is a large. It ws slightly larger than my other rides in the past which were specialized 19"/L. I have since went back to my 2012 epic as the fit and handling are superior for me and I am not racing ( the vertical stiffness of th air 9 frame always left me feeling fatigued). The upgrades that I would choose for my build after 5-600 miles on the frame would be xt brakes, fox shock, and carbon handlebar. Racing Ralph (or other schwalbe 2.25) tires are a great upgrade too, with a little bit of ride quality improvement, super light rolling, and grippy. Only downside to this tire is lifespan. I am about 2/3 through the tread of Rr rara SS after about 500 mi and they ain't cheap!

Very nice looking setup ... I wish niner had a matte finish rigid
fork. I had the whiskey fork but it didn't match that well.

Yeah agree, the bike would look nice in black licorice as well. Typo; 8,5kg is 18,7lbs.

Nice bike Petteri! The bars are rotated quite a bit forward, isn't it awkward when the bar ends rise up? Backsweep in bars means BACK, not UP...

That's the best position for wrists, to get them twisted "forward" as I like.

    Raw Air 9 Small

Craigslist special. The lady I bought it from was a racer for a local shop and decided to quit riding a few years ago. Total build cost around $4200 - I got it for a lot less . The only issue I have is being a guy with a predominately pink bike. But hey it rides good!

Just built this up last week and have put a few delightful rides in on it already! Coming from a BMC Te29, and this is far and away a much better bike(granted I upgraded the fork and other components at the same time).
Love the look and love the ride! Waiting on a new lower headset top cap to take full advantage of the Syntace stem by slamming it.

haha I just cut it down yesterday. I rode the bike for a couple weeks trying find the right height for the stem. I changed the stem from 80mm to 90mm.

I just realized I listed the wrong drive train . It actually has the XO1 drive train.

    Its a sweet ride.

    New Air9

    Hi all,

Over the last months I've built up my new Air9 from a bare frame and all the parts I that work for me. I'll start with some background info: I started XC racing at the age of 13 here in the Netherlands and have been racing ever since. After a couple of years I switched to marathon racing here in Europe and have competed in almost all the large marathons in Europe. During this time I've also completed 2 studies and now just entered the working life for a few months. Thus the racing will become a bit less, different priorities I guess. But the good news: now I've got the money to buy new bikes . So I treated myself to a brand new Niner Air9! Below are some build pics and the final result. Very happy how it turned out! The bike is fun and incredibly fast to ride!

    Air 9 pics-2013-12-28-15.19.16.jpg

A collection of the parts to go on:
    Air 9 pics-2014-04-05-08.51.46.jpg

Very happy with my Chinese carbon rims, built up with DT 240 hubs to create a 1400grams wheelset.
    Air 9 pics-2014-04-18-17.27.24.jpg

Adding some color to the bike:
    Air 9 pics-2014-05-17-20.24.39.jpg

    On it's shakedown ride:
    Air 9 pics-2014-05-04-13.16.28.jpg

Final weight with snakeskin tires is 9,25kg. Now it's time to enjoy it!

    Regards, Frank

Here is my new to me A9C, 19lbs as you see it, but I could take 2 pounds off easy with lighter wheels and tires. I just recently became aware of the new Rock Shox RS-1 which would be the only fork I would consider for this machine! Perhaps when the prices get back into the realm of mere mortals!

Just finished up my A9C build, very happy with how it came out!

Went 32 X 20. Rear cog is by Chris King, would have gone with the Niner Cogalicious but was tired of waiting months and months while Niner kept changing their backorder dates.

Front chain ring is a narrow/wide I designed and machined.

new '13 Air 9 alloy build

Bought one of the closeout/discontinued Air 9 hydroformed aluminum frames from Jenson and built it up with existing parts. This is my 5th Niner frame.
    Air 9 pics-1-fullsizerender-1-.jpg

1x10 SLX drivetrain (crankset, derailleur, shifter, cassette, chain)
    Race Face narrow/wide chainring 30t
    XT brakes
    Reba RLT 100mm fork
    Race Face Next carbon post
Niner Flat Top alloy bar 740mm
    FSA 80mm stem
    Arch rims
2.4 Racing Ralph front and rear
    Ritchey V2 WCS Streem saddle
    Time ATAC pedals
Chris King rear hub (10+ years old and still going strong)
    Velocity front hub

25 lbs even. Set 7 PR's on my first ride tonight. Alloy hardtails are underrated.

Hey bembry45, what length fork is that up front? 120mm? I just ordered an Air9 frame from Jenson and wondering what to put on the front.

By no means am I an expert but the Air 9 all the way up to its carbon brothers is a serious XC frame. With that said I think you'll get the most fun & efficiency out of the bike with 100mm. If your looking for 120mm or bigger probably thinking the Ros9 little bit more of a trail oriented frame. Either way handling is great...incredibly nimble especially climbing over roots & rocks. Through axle's make a world of a difference. Make sure you post when you start building!!

Are you running a 120mm fork? From your pictures compared to others I have seen of the Air 9 your bb drop doesn't look to low as your chainstay looks pretty horizonal to the ground.
I know the newest Air 9 frame can take a 100mm - 120mm fork. I have a Rock Shox Reba Team with 20mm thru axle set at 120mm, but can be adjusted to 80mm or 100mm also.

    upgrade to air

after 5 years riding an EMD, it was time for an upgrade to an Air 9 frame. Lucky enough I could still find my favorite, an 2012 black anodised large Air 9.

I thought wintertime would be ideal to do a new build. Less time on the bike means more time to work on it. Now the bike is ready, but it is still too soon to go to the Alps.
