    3 Bikes, 3 Price Points (cross-post)

The unthinkable happened to me last week - my 6th month old 2012 RIP 9 was stolen. Stan's/Hadley/Arch EX wheels, Fox34, LEV, full XT... My wife (God bless her) cried for me and gave me the go ahead for another bike.

Bike 1 - $2750 for a used 2012 Bandit. Fox 34, XTR rear, SLX front, X7 cranks, Reverb, stock wheel set.

Bike 2 - $4000ish for a new RIP 9, XT build, Rev 140. (insert similar suggestion here)

    Bike 3 - $5200ish for a new RIP 9 RDO, XT, Rev 140.

Obviously, the RDO is the best bike, but I'm wondering if the jump to the updated RIP or the longer travel Bandit will be just fine.

    I'm open to suggestions...

That latter for the alloy with the 1 x 11 drivetrain sounds PURRRFECT and gets my vote.

Sorry about the theft (always one of my biggest fears).

That's lookin good to me, too. But if I get the X0 RDO, I can get a 28t spiderless Wolftooth ring and get 90% of what XX1 has to offer.

Of course, I can do the same with the X0 alloy RIP.

I would go for the Alloy Rip9 with XX1

The 10% you would miss out on the X0 with 28 tooth ring is an Important 10%

Sorry to hear you had your bike stolen.

Well, at 4500 it becomes a choice between XX1 and a set of Torch wheels. What say you, to that, muzz?

    Now you are being hard.

I love XX1 & I love Torch wheels, I have both on my Rip9 RDO.

But what 1 do I like the most ??????

Well the XX1 is nicer to use & will make the bike faster in some places, Were as the Torch wheels are very nice & will make the bike faster in most places.

Torch wheels are not going to get much cheaper any time soon, Were as X01 will come out at some stage & make a cheaper option for an upgrade & then you will have the X0 to sell.

So I would take the wheels over XX1

I'm leaning in that direction. Looking at a gearing chart, if I get a 28t Wolftooth my lowest gear will be between my current 1st and 2nd. I can manage that. My top end won't be very tall but I'm ok with that.

The wheels will be good everywhere. Are you running 24 or 32 on the torches?

I have the Torch 32 Trail carbon's with 32 spokes.

I have seen the 24's & they are a nice wheel & I'm thinking of getting a set for my wife.

But here is the thing & why I went 32, I owned a race car shop for 25 odd years & raced & won many champion ships on tracks & hill climbs & have also Co driven in over 100 Rally's.

In all cases having gear that you trust 100% will make you faster & better & keep your mind on the job to make up far more time than just saving a few grams ever will.

For me I like to push real hard on the down's & although I'm sure the 24's would have held up for me, There wouldn't have been that 100% faith that they would handle anything I could throw at them & I may have not pushed as hard on them.

I am running a 30t 1x10 with a wolf tooth ring, and I was surprised how quickly I adjusted. I do plenty of steep, long climbs and really wanted xx1, but I've got CK hubs and don't want to buy a new wheel set.

I'm with everyone else on getting the alloy Rip9. Sweet looking bike.

Nice, hill. Thanks for the input there. XT? X0?

I'm leaning that way, too. Now the question is green or black?

XT as that is what I already had, but the X0 cranks seem like a really nice option for 1x drivetrains.

I don't think so.. all the pivot bolts on the CVA are red, and the "9" logo is red. Basically, I think every Niner, no matter what color.. looks good with red components due to those reasons.

Black/red looks angry. Green/red looks flashy. Leaning toward angry, more because flashy ain't so much my style.

Now you know that is not the case, 1 of each is the best.

This is probably the wrong place for this, but there are some knowledgeable people in this thread right now, so I'll ask: what makes the torch twice as good as a flow wheel set?

    Twice as good ?

Well it's not twice as good, The I9 Torch wheel set has nice light hubs & you can buy in the colour you like.

They also let you change the axle standards, front & rear with a End cap change only.

You can run a 10 speed free hub or the new XD for running XX1

The free hub has 120 point engagement (3 deg ) were as a lot of hubs only have 24 or 30

You can get them in flash Alloy spokes or normal steel J spokes.

They have some very wide & strong rims for there weight.

As for flows, Well flows don't get made any more.
But they were a nice wide & strong wheel that run tubeless easy.

By twice as nice I mean twice as expensive.

And by flow I mean Flow EX with the 3.30 hub.

Welp, I put in the order...

    RIP 9 alloy, black
    Dual Position Rev 140
    X0 cranks
    32t Wolf Tooth
    X0 type 2 RD
    X0 cassette/chain
    Torch Trail 32 Red/Red/Black wheels
    Reverb
    RF Next bar/Turbine stem/Atlas saddle
    Oury Lock ons
    HD 2.35 TSC front
    NN 2.25 PSC rear

Now for some good flats... I wouldn't dare parse through that pedal thread again. Any recommendations?
