    2011 Rip 9 - Need a new crankset (it's complicated)

I have a 2011 Rip 9, current setup is a pieced together 3x9. I'm having some chain slap and shifting issues and was told swapping to a 2x10 crankset would help, and that this could be done even though I have 9 speed gearing. Can this be done? And if so, what kind of crankset/bb combination and size do I need? Would something like the SRAM TruVativ X9 work? Or the Shimano Deore XT?

Apparently chain suck is fairly common running 3x on a Rip 9 (after some Google search). Bummer. Seems the best fix is going to a 2x.

So, can I easily convert 3x9 to 2x9 with a "2x10" crankset? And what size BB do I need for a Rip?

No problems running 2x10 crankset with 9 speed drivetrain despite what Shimano would have you believe. I'm currently running XT FC-M785 crankset and FD-M786 front derailleur on my RIP 9 and it works beautifully. BB is supplied along with the crankset so no need to worry about getting the wrong one.

What he said, but look around. Better prices to be had.

Thanks a ton guys. Sorry for the noob questions, but does SRAM make an equivalent crankset? I'm running XO shifters and X9 derailleurs...guessing it would be optimal to stay brand consistent?

You can mix and match brands without concern. My Rip 9 is running Shimano crankset and front derailleur with SRAM X.0 rear derailleur and shifters and Shimano XT M770 cassette with SRAM PC991 chain and everything works fine together.

I'm running the BB30 version of the Truvativ X9 crankset in your first post on my Jet 9 RDO which is also running a 2x9 drivetrain similar to my Rip 9... also works fine. Just make sure you pick a front derailleur that matches the chainring tooth count of the crankset, SRAM makes specific ones for each size of 2x10 crankset.
