I read 'as naked as the day I was born', was preparing myself for the worst wondering if I should have clicked on the topc...

No **** mate, I guess you can never have enough Nicolais . I do really like the machined N in the headtube, gives it some extra class. Ion ST it was right? Not going for a Karve like finish, and keeping it more raw like on the pics I take it?

That's an Ion ST, and it is going to be really beautiful ! You've made the good choice to wait for the next version of the Ion g-box !

Next week she will be built. Was not going to say anything at all till she was built, but hey, wanted to share the joy....

Will go into the build later.... Most items will come off my other Nicolai Nucleon etc... Well what can come off of a GBoxx bike... LOL....

Fork, brakes, front wheel, am rebuilding the rear wheel with a normal hub etc....

Thanks for the comments.... The first raw frame to come out of the Nicolai factory.... it is yummy....

Wow, I just had a second look at the welds, that is some serious coin there! Looks like someone lined up a roll of overlapping US nickels.

The ION makes every other DH bike look like a flexy Huffy.

I knew you had something up yer sleeve. That's gonna be one hell of a ride there Whafe. Congrats!

Wish our trips were going to overlap again this year but I'll be leaving from Whistler on Friday the 8th. If you get tired of the Crankworks crowds, we'll be a few hours to the East shredding at SilverStar.

I too am looking forward to seeing your ST and CC up and running...

The frame is a large.... I like things a little smaller to be able to throw her around a little...

When you going to post in your thread the builds.... Mwah ha ha ha, i want to drool some more

    Weak at the knees.....

Fark me silly, that ST reads like it's race bred

The chop will disappear before your eyes and under your arse! Run some extra special deep sag, and enjoy the annihilation of terrain. She looks like she will take some muscle to finesse but you will be well rewarded.

    No Boss shock

I for sure, I love sag...... Bulk sag is indeed needed, going to be different trying the Vivid shock, read good things, so will for sure be different to the CCDB, but am looking forward to a DH sled with oodles of soak up them bumps stuff....

There is a review of the ION ST in the latest Australian Mountain Bike. They tested it with Boss suspension and came away drooling. They had fun on the bike and gave it mad props. AMB is shaping up to be a good magazine under the younger leadership of more gnarly and capable riders (XC to DH). For example they reviewed the new Canondale Moto in the same issue. The liked the changes but spotted that it was not laterally stiff. I like that honesty and never tried to cover it up.

Whafe, just waiting for my broken leg to get fixed before building CC and ST. May be
another three months or so yet? Will post builds as soon as I can.

Looking forward to your ride report of that Ion, she's going to be special! Do you think
it might be worth trying the CCDB later on?

Oh yes, my mistake, sorry forgot about the leg..... I have been in the position having new builds come ready while am recovering from operations on the shoulder etc.

    Heal up well

Yes I may look at a CCDB, have always had a great run with the 2 I have, will have an open mind on this shock though.... I may also look at it when I sell the Nucleon GBoxx frame, CCDB, rear wheel etc

Funny to see this tread, I just sent an email of to Nicolai asking about US distributors. Have any insight on where to purchase their frames in the US.

    I "looking" at the http://www.nicolai.net/products/e-frames/e-helius-fr.html.

I would await to hear the official word from Nicolai Germany, I know there has been some changes in the US of A for Nicolai. Which will be a step forward for the customers.

The Helius FR is a fantastic bike, I dont say that from a biased view point because I have one, have ridden a stack of bikes, this one is a freak of nature, for want of a better word....

yeah ha, components are rolling in... I arrive into LA on Tuesday US time, so will get busy on it and get this puppy built up...

All the components have arrived from Deity.... I have to say, have dealt with Deity before, it was a great company to deal with then, a year later, it is better again... It is so so simple, no BS, no steamy brown stuff talk. They do what they say they will do and have proven this to me.... So thank you Deity....

Chad at the Barn is building up my rear wheel, and sending other bits n bobs, so we are good to go.....

Chad's the man! He built my Hadley/Flows for my El Rey I got from him. I'm not a skinny person are these frame pretty stiff? I hate a flexy frame. Short story on all this is I love my El Rey. But miss my 06 RFX and looking for a semi big bike to do things the El Rey is not really designed to do. At this point I'm just looking but this frame has caught my eye. If not the Helius FR it most likely with be the El Terremoto.

Yep agree HUGELY, Chad is the man.....

The Helius FR is indeed stiff, in fact "stiffer than a honeymooners chopper". The El Terre is a great frame and bike too. Cant go wrong with Nicolai, Ventana, Knolly or Turner..... The engineering perfection and dead perfect allignment is something else on a Nicolai, something that is important to me.....

Feel free to ask away with questions...

The time is nearing for completion...

Am at the airport in Auckland, about to fly to LA...

All the ordered components have arrived from Deity. HUGE thank you to Eric and the Deity crew, excelled again....

Chad from the Barn has come through again, all the bits n bobs arrived from him into LA today also....

So she will be built when I get to LA...

I have the Nucleon GBoxx with me, will put it up for sale. Be the frame (L), rear wheel Mavix EX823 rim, DT super comp spokes with the Nicolai rear hub, brand new CK 1.5 Headset, Thomson 0 deg, 50 mm Stem, RS Totem 2007 2 step (power coated black) SDG seat post and SDG I beam saddle..... All someone will need is brakes, handle bar and a front wheel....

Anyways, am peaking and excited to be about to build this beast and then head to Whistler for 8 days riding..... Everything starts with a thought....

Did you get that tripod thingy out of the SkyMall magazine you find on planes?!

Bike looks incredible by the way -- I think these pics alone have convinced me enough to start saving up for a Nicolai in the future

Arrived in LA all tickety boo........ All the parts have arrived as I mentioned... A slight muddle up, have been sent Med cage rear der, wanted a short cage...

My Helius FR is running a short cage rear der, I may take this Med cage that was sent and swap, so run a med cage on the FR and a short cage on the ION

Have gone with a 38 front and 11 - 23 rear Dura Ace cassette... Is this gearing going to be too tall do you think? Thoughts...

Few pictures as I was sorting through the bits n bobs...

Wibble! That bike is going to look the nuts!

I'm not sure whether the 38t ring will be too big but at least it's an easy swap if you need to go 34 or 36t. Can't wait to see it built up. Get a move on Whafe
