Good job! Maximum Stoke Day - Nicolai Factory Visit

Today was the big day... My dream of making a visit to the Nicolai Factory, Offices became a reality...

I organised this visit with Falco Milne (Marketing, Communications Manager), once the organisation was done, Crisillo decided to join me.

So I flew from Barcelona to Frankfurt, met up with Crisillo (awesome guy) got the rental and made our way towards Hannover more of less. Nicolai is based some 50Km from Hannover. And yes, when I say it is a small town where Nicolai are based, think really really small, maybe a town of 400 people, I kid you not. A stunning little rural German town. Have travelled pretty extensively in Germany in the rural areas, and this area was stunning....

See the little pictoral of the trip and Motel...

No drinks at the pub at arrival, was near midnight, great little local hotel though. Great breakfast...

In the morning we made our way to Nicolai. Was cool driving there, when you see the village, you just know it is going to be a quaint little town, you cannot even tell that there is a very classy bike frame factory, there is no sign out the front..

    See below the offices etc....

A few details, the company kicked off more or less as it is now in 1997, at the time there were 4 staff, there is now 20 staff. Nicolai produces around 2000 frames per year, over the total range. The largest seller is off course the Helius FR. Around 30 GBoxx frames are built per year. The number of frames produced is increasing annually. Of the 20 staff it seemed that half if not more were involved in Design, R&D etc....

It was a greeat experience to sit down with Kalle Nicolai. Kalle went over some history etc, the image the company recieved with the first gearbox models, the Nucleor type bikes as Kalle calls them... It is a life dream for Kalle to see gearbox's as the standard.

We were allowed to take pictures anywhere, except in the R&D main room, but we were aloud in there. Was great to see the new generation gearbox's, belt drive systems, allsorts... The future will for sure be very good for us biker peeps...

Next photos are of the manufacturing part so to speak. The photos will speak for themselves.

    Falco & the C&C Machines

Rear Chain Stays, all milled, look hot...

Getting the tubes ready for an Argon

    Rear der hangers

GBoxx components (these are now being licensed out to other companies for use)

    Setting up for welding

I think my fav photo I took

    Fresh as fillets, yummy yummy

Ali ready for milling, was a cool looking Ali library

    Prep after paining

    Frames frames and more frames

The new 2008 Helius FR (Yummy)

From Left, Falco, Kalle and Whafe (I look like a focking giant on this bike)

Falco's Steed, a Helius ST, felt sweet to through a leg over

The new 2008 ION, this felt great. The European SRAM team, rate this bike hugely, like mentioned the best riding DH bike they have been on. Interestingly enough, the team feel it is best in the 8 inch mode, NOT 9. The suspension works what the deem best in this setting.

Sorry, my ugly mug on a bike again for a few pics

This is Fred's new Sky Camo 2008 Helius CC. I spoke to Fred if I can post the shots, he was more than happy. He will be happier too when he gets the frame, and I guess even more happier happier when his ass is hauling ass on it. It looks mint as. It is awaiting shipping!!!!!

Overall, I had a fantastic near 4 hours at the Nicolai Factory. As am sure that Crisillo did, he will post up as well...

The whole team at Nicolai were great hosts, hugely passionate, and seemed a happy happy team, I dont just say that lightly. I have loads of staff and I hope that outside visitors would think my team was this happy.

There is for sure some very bright engineers working on things in R and D too. The area where the GBoxx development was hapenning was pretty cool indeed. Some very cool looking stuff...

I will type up more if indeed questions are asked, if you would like some of the pics high res, please PM me and I will email them to you...

    Cheers
    Whafe

well..what can I add..... it just ruled!

The whole Nicolai team is extremely cool......... everybody was happy and proud of their work and Falco was awesome showing us around, explaining everything to the tiniest detail....

and to top it all off, Karl (Nicolai) invites us to talk about bikes over some coffee and cookies.... extremely down-to-earth and just generally-cool guy

I expected it to be cool.... but not THAT cool...I mean basically we spent the whole morning around the factory and discussing bikes...amazing stuff

All good Booner, I had you with me in mind, and Err, Lorni, CF, ncig, Artin Aga etc etc etc.....

Yep the 08 FR is a totally different beast, the rear is so so much more stiffer with the shortening of the Chainstays etc etc..... Was cool to see mine on the planning board, will be finished by the 3rd week of November..... Mmmmm how long will it take to get shipped I wonder.... I am going to give Err a call in the morrow and let him know when it is planned for bilding etc.....

Was indeed a highlight day for me. And yes the ION is a seriously cool bike........ I would be oedering one if I didnt have the Nucleon GBoxx. But I do so all good.......

Later, fock it slate here, need to sleep, am as hypo as a giant hypo thing though....

yep..the factory doesn't have any "stock", everything is ordered by the time it is built... it is up to the dealer/distribuitors to "create the stock"

Man, now I'm jealous like in a giant, big bad jealous thing!!!

Seriously, they would have had to drag me out from the factory by a bunch of cops!

Being the gearhead I am, I would still be bothering Karl and the crew over there.

I guess I'll have to start saving to get one of those beautiful toys.

I'm downloading all your pics, dawgs!

They should pay you to put that on the cover of their catalog or the home page of the website...

Being as I'm 6-2, (close to your height right?) how did the ION feel? Was it the large? Good cockpit?

Thanks for the comments on the welding shot... One of those fluke shots

U Cliffy, it felt real good, hard to say just in a carpark, but I really liked it. As I said if no GBoxx, I would be ordering one for sure. Ubber plush. Was cool hearing the feedback of it from races etc. Really liking it....

Artin, the next build run of Helius FR's, which MINE is on starts in around 1 week, so you need to see if yours is confirmed for building. The Nicolai team has a great system for tracking orders, they are all on a big magnetic board.... Kalle did mention a bike dealer in Canada though.....

We never bought up the topic, Kalle did mention re working with DT back at AMP. I never delved into what I have read DT mention re Nicolai bikes on a couple of Thread...

Bro, you being my resident biek Guru, you would have wood in your life if you were there. Once day am sure you will get there, hope so. I menitoned your name and Blacksheep to the team, they are fully aware of the great work you are doing.... SO yep, was a killer time, wanted to hang there all day...

Thanks Dr Phil, I take that as a compliment. All joking aside, you would have been in heaven in the R and D shop. Was awesome to see stuff happening..... Function is more important than asthetics with Nicolai.....

My thoughts too CAO, it was like being home in a small farming town in New Zealand, except we have MORE SHEEP..... And yes, the ION is bad A$$..... Dont discount what is coming with a gearbox... They rate hugely...............

Being the gearhead I am, I would still be bothering Karl and the crew over there.

I guess I'll have to start saving to get one of those beautiful toys.

I'm downloading all your pics, dawgs!

This is a serious "thanks for sharing" one.
Warpy, Dont worry, we didnt want to leave either... Yes and you being a tota gear head, you would have been as happy as a pig in sh!t..

Let me know which pics you want high res shots of.....

Kalle and his team were true awesome nice people...

Err, was indeed the new one, and yep, was fully dialed. It wasnt as heavy as I thought to be honest. Funny, the main comment from Falco was the paint job enabled the bike to still look good filthy.....It reinforced that I am glad the colour I have chosen.... The BB area is build like a brick sh!t house bro, was one stiff solid puppy

Well after talking to the team, you would for sure be a one of a kind with a sky camo ION...

Of the camo paint schemes it seems the Jungle Camo, shown below is the most common. So those of us that put our billies ont he line, can be pretty much assured of a one of a kind really....

yeah.. those were still "proto paint jobs".... they still had to "test them out" before becoming official.... I wonder how they test a paint job .. seriously, I suppose they have to study if it can become part of the process, holds up well, etc...

Hey a big thanks to both Whafe and Cris for posting the pics of their extrordinary trip. I must admit I am totally envious of you both.

The pic of the Helius FR makes me want one even more and I may even have an ST someday soon too. That blue/purple ST is the bomb. What colour scheme is that? Some lovely bikes and now I know that nearly all are one of a kind, makes me feel better for paying the money to own one.

Seriously guys, many thanks for sharing that with us, I just can't wait to own one now. Whafe, did you get a go on the FR or even that lovely blue ST? Any impressions?

Great write ups from both of you.

Hi ya Bro. Was a cool day indeed, in case you hadnt noticed...

Yep I only threw a leg over the Helius FR, but having ridden one which of course was an 07, I did notice immediately how stiff it was in the rear, actually "stiffer than a honeymooners chopper" We really need to take note of how different a bike the 08 FR is compared to the 07, vastly different, the shorening of the chain stays and the picot is giving the bike so much more strength and stiffness...... Was so cool to see mine up on the schedule board, will be completed by during last week of November, Yeah Ha.

Yes, the Helius ST, this is a new 08. Felt great, well as much as you can tell in a car park. it wasnt has heavy as I had imagined. Weight was in my mind after reading posts by No Style and Err... It felt totally pedal friendly for sure, was stiff also.

If you look at the pictures of C Freds sky blue camo Helius CC, the Helius ST of Falco's is those colours but done viw the dizzy cmao way if that makes sense. So I ma getting my Helius FR in Dizzy Urban Camo, so think of that dizzy type but witht he bly camo colours..

    Lorni, you get mail?

A rare visit for me here but I heard that Cris escaped his job (where he does nothing but surf mtbr anyway) and went with you. I love the buildings- very nice and quaint and with lots of charm on the outside.

It looks like you guys had a fun day and the guys at Nicolia look like they were dying to just start wiping all your fingerprints off everything you guys were touching.

We had a very inactive day on mtbr. With cris gone, the post count and queries dropped enough to speed up the servers significantly. I'm glad you guys had fun. Now back to work..err..surfing.

Well Cris didnt seem to get withdrawl issues yesterday, am sure MTBR coped ok, we had a blast hooking up and hanging out.....

What can I say- I am a fan of old-world architecture. Studying it opened my eyes to skills lost and buried so even an old barn with wood carvings intrigues me.

Regarding the bikes- I have always been a supporter of small companies that control the process and they seem to be be that. I have also always been a fan of German engineering and construction (blame my dad for that). I find them to be very solidly built indeed. The looks can grow on me though I find them a bit industrial.

Aesthetic appreciation changes and so I do find they are growing on me from an aesthetic perspective. If I ever get a chance to demo one, I certainly will. I have been a sucker for German products outside of US-made products for good reason, I believe. I'll keep an open mind as I usually do but my attitude is positive on the bikes and the company. I am glad you got a chance to go there and share these pictures.

It was the Barn pictures that drew me in, as odd as that sounds

The stuff inside the Barns was very nice though. The Germans have never lost their ability to build excellent products. The low workweek hurts them from a global productivity standpoint (not Nicolai- just in general) but their attention to detail and basic construction and design methods result in products that last for a very long time.

I'm sure Nicolia is no exception to that.

yeah.. that pic is from the "attic" storage room... the whole structure of the Barn was pretty cool....... I also found it pretty neat, that they chose to invest in refurbishing the barns instead of taking the easy-way-out and knock them down to build new stuff...... pretty nice buildings

d stix, your welcome bro.... Custom is easy peasy japaneasy lemon squeezy! Almost every frame is built like it is custom really....

The camo paint jobs are awesome, I know when I ordered the anodized camo on my Nucleon, it was un sighted so to speak, but in the flesh, looked awesome.... Yeah and the paint on CF's is wicked cool, as is the dizzy one on Falco's Helius ST.....
