    Helius AM Questions

Hi... kicking tyres about maybe a new frame come the new year, have always liked Nicolais.

Currently on a Spicy 516 - given the similar suspension layout, I suspec the Nicolai has some similarities - anyoen ridden both and got some feedback on the differences?

Also - what's the i2i measurement on the AM's shock? From pics it looks a small enough shock. Can different lengths be fitted? (I'd be using a 160mm travel setup)

    i've ridden both.

Nicolai is more neutral peddaling on the small ring if you have one.

Nicolai is more nimble due to 430mm chainstays opposed to 438 on the spicy.
Another factor is that the effective chainstay length will grow even more once the spicy is sagged.

main reason for me to change was the fact that i dropped my spicy on a rock and put a nice dent in the rear triangle. So I decided to get a (tankish) Helius AM instead.
Also never really liked how you could not drop the post fully on the spicy.

For me the AM is clearly the better chasis, it's heavier though.

    Regarding the shock lengths:
Spicy runs on 216mm, so does the AM.
earlier versions of the AM (pre 2010 I think) came with 200mm shocks.

Cool, thanks for the detailed answer. That makes sense, looking through the build thread, some of the shocks looks tiny.

The chainstay length is a good thing, Found the Spicy a little long at times (mine's an L too) when riding tight alpine switchbacks and the like.

I run 1x10, so the granny ring isn't an issue for me, and a dropper post, so no issues dropping the seat. Press fit BB has been fine for me too, don't think it's any worse than standard BBs. Think some spicy users had issues with water ingress at the seat collar, but I don't have a QR up there, and the dropper post never moves, so that seems to prevent it.

    Heavier I'm less keen on....

The amount of zesty's and spicy's that have gone back due to cracks at the bb is unreal. Such a floored designed and why oh why they opted for it over standard bb is beyond me. Sadly the only negative on a decent frame.

Press fit allows for a bigger, stiffer BB shell though, that whole area of the bike can be made bigger & stronger. Think any issues they had were manufacturing/quality ones, moreso than the design or the Press fit. Less of an issue with newer bikes anyhow, I think - and the Lapierre warranty is five years now too.

(Isn't it odd how you feel obliged to stand up for your brand on here? )

Don't get me wrong I like lapierre bikes, a lot of companies could learn from the attention to detail they put into their frames. But I doubt you'd find a cheerful response from any bike shop mechanic when question about press fit bb's

hahaha ... it is called an affinity to the things you owned and if have stood up for something else that you do not own, then you are on your way to selling your current ride and getting that. ... it is also to convince yourself that you have in the first instance made the right choice in getting what you owned.

the new 2011 AMs come wtih a rear shock i2i of 216mm
