    Helius AC Pinion build

Been dreaming of building an internal gearbox bike for years and have been watching Nicolai's progress closely, and waiting for them to nail it on an all-mountain platform, so recently ordered my frameset. Just wish the Gates drive would work on a rear susser.

Would like to thank the Chevy Tahoe driver that trashed my S Works Enduro for the excuse to build my ultimate dream bike. :

And Darin at Nicolai USA for great advice and customer service.

I'm 6'5, ride medium to hard in Orange County, CA, dry rock/sand so need a solid, versatile build to complement the bike, while trying to maintain fairly low weight on unsprung/rotating weight.

Here's my planned build so far:

2014 Helius AC Pinion 27.5 XL. Graphite Grey powder coat front triangle, Ti ano rear triangle, silver ano extra love parts and Pinion, silver classic Nicolai logo, stealth cable routing.

    2015 Fox 34 Talas 27.5 160 FIt CTD w/remote trail adjust
2015 Fox Float CTD Boost Valve
Fox dual front/rear remote shock adjust
    Crank Brothers Iodine wheelset
Schwalbe TL Ready Snakeskin Racing Ralph rear /Nobby Nic Front
    Fizik Kurve Chameleon saddle
    Thomson Elite dropper seat post
    Thomson carbon riser handlebar
    Thomson Elite stem
    Race Face Half Nelson grips
    XTR brake set
    Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3 pedals
    Cane Creek Angleset headset
    Other bits TBD

    Should weigh in at 32lbs.

Stand by for more details & pics. Frame arrives in early August. Any advice would be very welcome.

Your build will obviously work for you. I'd do things a little differently but that's why my Helius AC Pinion is built differently using the one true wheel size, 26". Mine is a small size frame as I'm closer to the ground than you.

I think Fox suspension has been on the decline, or at least the other brands are catching up and overtaking in performance over the past few years. I'm running RS Pikes and a Monarch Plus. So far they are both great. I don't use lock outs either.

Friends don't let friends use Crank Brothers gear or ride Yetis. That's just how I feel. There are plenty of good wheelsets out there. I've had great luck with Mavic Crossmax SX, Shimano XT and XTR and Enve wheels. I wouldn't hesitate to run any of those again. Time pedals are awesome if you want clipless that look like Eggbeaters but work reliably.

Cockpit stuff is personal so if the Thomson and Fizik parts work go for it. You are going to have to cut part of your grip off to fit the shifter. Will the RF grips still work there? I hair sprayed on some glow in the dark Oury grips. Comfortable, easy to cut, cheap if I need to cut them off and replace. I have a KS Lev seat post. It works well but I'm not completely sold on dropper posts.

At the end of the day it's your bike and you should build it up how you want. Enjoy the ride. It will probably ruin every other derailleur running bike out there for you. I'll never buy another mtb that uses a derailleur system to change gears.

I am agree with crank1979... CB wheels?? no thanks...

I think Minion supertacky in front and Larssen rear are better and cheaper tyres for dry and a Works Components headset works better than CC Angleset... Suspensions? I would try Bos or a mix CC DB Air and Pike fork.

    Enjoy the bike!!

2015 Fox Float CTD Boost Valve

    Thomson Elite stem
    Race Face Half Nelson grips
    XTR brakeset
    Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3 pedals
    Hope E2 headset

Will post a basic review soon.

Here's some pics, which do not do it justice.

    ^^

That is beautiful... Nicely specc'ed too.

Wonder how many Nicolai pinions exist in so cal (besides yours and mine).

PS...you might want to remove one or two links from the chain...still looks a little loose.
