Idea! Chicksands UK the Big Meet ? Date to be worked out.

1st of who thinks Whafe should pack up the FR and fly over to meet us UK Nicolai owners,

Does Chicksands sound like the best place for a good day to play ? Or are there better places ?

I have not been there yet but will do over the next month or so and will report back on my findings.

Lets keep the options open and bear with the people who are mid build.

5c0tty, no worries I am up for it if not overseas. I can post up some photos of all at Chicksands as I only live 20 minutes away and post them for you all to see. The amount of air miles whafe has got under his belt, he should make UK no worries, what do you say Whafe?

Mmmmmm. I would for sure be up for it. To be honest, have a shiat load of airpoints.. LOL

May would be very good or late April, when the weather picks up in Spring.... Be keen to shoot across from Spain and come over for the weekend..... A clan of Nicolai's, with these builds we are seeing, will be a spectacle of bikes and a total blast....

    Lets keep the planning going....

It all sounds good. Unfortunatly I will be overseas early April to late June but will be able to follow you all on this site and by email. A get together sounds brilliant.

If Whafe is coming over for a weekend, maybe we should opt for something a bit more special and "epic", Coed-y-brenin or something? Us UK locals can still meet in Chicksands of course, will probably become my main riding place when I get my car

Its all going to seem a little lame to Whafe !
We have all seen the trails that he has been lucky enough to ride over the last month or so.

But with us all being on Nicolais it would be extra special where ever we end up

Maybe meeting at Skyline Cycles shop would be good as its a Nicolai dealer and the drop off cafe is also great for all our eating needs. Links below for more info.

Lots of time to plan this Global meeting of FR's and other Nicolais.

If we sort out some designs for a tee shirt I would get them printed as a little keeper from the day. Would just need to arrange for the cost of the tee shirts to be covered. I have some ideas for cutting the cost for this and will investigate more.

What about meeting at Afan - I'm being a bit selfish here, as I live very close to Afan.

Superb trails, that dry out very quickly even if it rains hard. Virtually no mud and plenty of different trails all very close to each other.

The stoke will be having a clan of Nicolai's together, so will leave the riding area to you peeps, but guess we want some sorts of challenges so to speak....

    Afan accommodation list

Here's a link to the local accommodation as supplied by Skyline Cycles.

Skyline Cycles are situated at the start of the trails, and they're a Nicolai dealer alos.

I'm a bit more partial to C-y-B, it's an hour less driving up from Cambridge. Lots of accomodation in Dolgellau (example). Advantage of Afan of course is we can all stay over at Nicolap99's place

Hey Boozzz, if I am not overseas, we could sort travel arrangements between us? However, I am out of country from 01 Apr - 01 July but could hook up some riding when I return? This Nicolai gathering sounds perfect, perhaps we should arrange a trip to warmer climates for us UK riders? Who is up for it?

Am sitting in the business lounge in Singapore, about to fly my next leg to Barcelona, well a quick 20 min stop in Milan...

Glad to hear you are walking again....

My legs are sore, did a big roadie yesterday morning with Momentus, then we did our usual Sunday morning mtb ride at a fairly fast pace... We were riding at 6.30, started with lights, kinda fun doing that, then headed home, showered and jumped on a plane....

Did chicksands today on my prophet... awsome... despite the driving snow and hail and mud it was fab.. it wont surprise you there were not many people there... did the 2x course loads of times in the end and had it dialed. Ill be heading back with the Nic in the next month as the shore was lethal wet and the 120 mm travel on the prophet sketchy on the bigger drops.

some of the groms are mental.. 14ft in the air over the dirt jumps without flinching

Nice. Wanted to go out on the Nic today as well, but in the end decided against it due to the weather being too sh*t. Next week then, hopefully. Bike's been sitting in my room now for almost a month, still haven't properly used it

I feel for you there Boozzz, I can only just look at my Nic as the leg is still bad after my last pile in. Am leaving the UK for a short spell in Afghan, so I will be hankering to get back and hopefully get some riding in tail end of the summer.
Karve you are a brave man hammering the dual in the wet, I have had some hairy moments in the first sweeping right hander in the wet, although it's great fun.

I like that phrase, 'warming up'. That's a very polite way to describe me being a dick pulling skids

It's a medium, your welcome to a spin if you spot me. Where else do you ride? To be honest I only take it to chicksands if my hardtail is broken. It's a beast of a bike

I often ride at Chicksands, just for the fun factor and to try and push my limits, it's taking a while but I am getting there. I also ride in Wales, mainly trail centres, this year I have really got into mild FR/DH from XC. I used to ride a Yeti 575 but found it was going to break at some point with what I was doing, hence the Nicolai.
I am hoping to get to the Alps on my return for a bit of DH fun but am hankering after a single ring set up purely for fun. The FR is a great bike but am looking for that little extra travel.

I am going to start to travel more towards the end of the year and start to build up a riding port folio that is worthy of a single ring bruiser, I just wish I had the bottle to go with it

So date wise, is the thoughts for May at Chicksands for a bit of a UK Nicolai get together?

Lorni, know you are going away, when will you be back? You mentioned towards the end of summer, is that Aug or September? Sorry for 100 questions, just would like to time this ride with you being there if it could be swung that way..

I am away from next weekend until early July provided all things go well. Would love to hang it with you guys although the UK is a long way to come just for Chicksands. Might I suggest somewhere with a little more? As some have suggested perhaps Afan or even Coed e Brenin? At least there is a bar, a campsite etc. Could be a primitive but awesome meet. What do you all think?

Goddamnit, to add to my misery, I just discovered my Cannondale Prophet has cracked 'n failed, at the swingarm. Lots of four letter words there.

On another note, Whafe, I agree with Lorni. I wouldn't come over just for Chicksands. Wales would be much better.

Lorni, is that Afghan as in Afghanistan? Nothing too dangerous I hope, we need you back in one piece

Yep, Afan sounds far better to be honest.... Am keen anywhere though, stokage is easly got riding with a group, but the terrain sounds better at Afan... as well as a bar and cafe etc..... July though is getting hard for me to swing it, stuck in a hard place, waiting for Lorni to get back and then when I can swing it...

Booze, yes thats Afghanistan, it's rather 'hot' at the moment but only three months to push. Afan sounds great as I have done all but the Downhill. Sounds like an awesome get together, there is also places to stay in and around the area.

Just a heads up.. The only riding day I have this weekend is the bank holiday Monday. I will be whipping out the full face and hitting Chicksands and Woburn. Not sure how its going to work as there may be some logistical issues getting my mates there.... Anyway ignoring that.. If anyone fancy's a Monday full of jumps and drops feel free to come hang out! Might be an opportunity to get some awesome Nicolai action shots!

Sounds great Karve, but I'm having some logistical issues of my own as well. I've decided to move back to Amsterdam in July (permanently), so won't be buying a car for the two and a half months I've got left here. But whenever you head to Thetford, let me know, as I can get there by train.

This was bound to happen !
I'm off to Afan with the boys on the Saturday as its going to be the last weekend before my mate with the Nomad wife drops a sprog ! So he will not be getting much riding in for some time...

Let me know when you are down Dorking way as we need to hook up for some Nicolai action on the North Downs.

I had a great ride out on Saturday some of the trails where just right and some where just swomps !!!!

Fella's..... We need to think when I should come across to the UK.

I should well be able to manage something in June.... But would need to organise around you all.... Would more than likely fly into Stanstead, dont mind driving somewhere....

    Any thoughts....

You're right Whafe. June would work for me, as I'm still here then. Then again, Lornibear won't be back before early July. I could possibly do that as well, even if I'm living back in Holland; could come over with the bike by boat, but of course would be somewhat more convenient if I'm still living here (might be the case if it's early July). I was also planning to go to Switzerland in July, but haven't set a date for that yet.

As for transport, if I'm not yet back in Holland I'd need to rent a car too, and Stansted isn't too far off from Cambridge, so in that case we might be able to do some carpooling?

I know mate, I know... At least it's better streeting in Amsterdam than in Cambridge, but won't be using the Nic for that. There's a decent bikepark a good 2 hr drive away, all the way down south. It's some pretty good riding down there as well. I would say locationwise for riding Amsterdam is of similar shite quality as Cambridge, so not much lost there, and much gained in other respects .

Well I think we set down a date in June. I am in Spain for pretty much all of June....

Is it best to fly to Stanstead, then grab a rental and pick any peeps up and head to the ride spot that you decide????

Ok, lets do June. At the moment I'm open for every weekend in June, so I've got no preference for a single one. How about the rest of you peeps? Lets get this date set.

Whafe, I think Stansted or perhaps Luton would be your best bet.

For the riding: Afan or Coed-y-Brenin? I've never been to either, but my vote goes to C-y-B because it's closer.

I am cool and the gang to ride in either, just to hang out and have some Nicolai stoke will be great....

Have just flown in from LA, am in Heathrow airport, the weather is awesome, long may it keep up this way....

So how long approx. would the drive be to these spots from Stanstead? May try and fly in early on a Saturday morning, then head out on the Sunday....

Let us get some numbers. Who is keen as?

It's quite a bit of a drive to the spots in Wales from the London area. From Stansted, it's about 4 hrs for both according to Google maps (though if you go to C-Y-B, the shortest route is via Cambridge ). We can also go somewhere in the Peak district, which is about a 3 hr drive from Stansted. As for numbers, I'm definitely in

Edit: I've done the trip to Wales slightly faster than this btw (Google map times are already pretty sharp), but you need calm traffic and keep your right foot down.

Fock, may well be better to fly into Luton as you mentioned, what is the driving time from Luton?

We need to sort out somewhere where we can all crash and hook up post the ride....

From Luton it's still 3 and a half hours to both in Wales, 2 and a half to the Peaks. We don't neccesarily need to go to Wales as far as I'm concerned. As you say, some decent riding and a nice chill out place is all that's needed. The Peak District is cool, but has anyone got any other suggestions that are closer to London?

There is a real good amount of riding to be had near Dorking in Surrey, Some of you will know Leith Hill, Ranmore, Holbury Hill, Trails from Peaslake shop ... There loads if you know where to look. Not much North shore ridding down here though..
Im working 14th June till 1 PM but will be able to swop if needed...

Oh so it is a bit of a drive from both airports.....

Mmm, what are the options... Am just reading the MBR mag, has the top 10 bike parks...

What about Dalby Forest (North Yorkshire) www.forestry.gov.uk/dalbyforest

    or Kirroughtree 7 Stanes trail......

Reading on, the 7 Stanes trail area rates highly... How far is this from Stansted, you can tell I am lazy to hook into Google maps or MapQuest.... LOL

I know, I already had a hard time finding one in the central Peak District for the 17 May weekend. Those proper trailcentres are are just not close to London: Yorkshire is even further afield way up north, not to speak of the 7 Stanes (Scotland) . Dorking is just about an hours drive from Luton. How good is good Scotty? Never been there, what's the landscape like?

Whafe no need to be so harsh on yourself but you are right that 7 Stanes is a long way from London !
Easy to fly up and hire a van or Mini bus but makes the whole trip major in terms of planing and outlay of hard earned cash...

Yeah, hear you on that one, that is more a spot to go for more than a weekend..

I dont think a 2 to 3 hour drive is nuts, but will leave it up to you guys to suggest where.... Then when you all come to New Zealand, I will suggest.... Fair deal....

Oh no! I just wrote a long reply, accidentally hit the back button on my mouse when I wanted to click post, and it's all gone! Here's an attempt at a reconstruct though.

Nice riding weather for sure this weekend. I'll be heading out to Thetford tomorrow on the Nic (would go on the dirtjumper, but I destroyed the wheels last week), so if anyone cares to join me... (probably not )

For the big Nic meet, I think Wales is out, too far away, don't want to do that to Whafe . Tell us a bit more about the riding in Dorking, Scotty, Karve. Is there good fun to be had for a weekend? Nice hills? Good places to hang out? And lets not forget to set that date.

Whafe, I might just go crazy and come to New Zealand. Some day. Never been to that part of the world before. Only thing holding me back slightly is the loooong flight (and also, less important of course, a ticket is on the pricy side).

Arrghhh the flight is not that long, for you just 2 x 12 hours.... I do it twice per month, it only makes me go fockin

Yeah, agree, we need a date in June please....

    OK a link or two.

    http://trails.mtbr.com/cat/trails-ar...1_4539crx.aspx

Having spent the last 15 years biking in the area of Dorking I know my way round and even now am still being shown new trails.. I'm sure the area can handle us for 2 days in june without any trouble at all. Dorking has far too many pubs and places to eat so that would not be a problem and there are hotel's a many for those from fair away. All so there is a Nicolai dealer who im sure would be happy to help with anything that may be needed over the weekend...

I think Karve should have his say and see where we go from there...

Looks pretty good 5c0tty. Gets my vote. Karve, have your say as well . Any other people?

I just quit my job here in Cambridge per the end of June. Will be going back to Amsterdam the 25th of June. So the 7/8, 14/15 or 21/22 weekend are all ok by me.

5c0tty / whats the best airport to fly into for this spot you are proposing please, the less driving time means more riding.... LOL

Boozzz. I can collect you, and then cruise to where we are planning to go...

N Downs is a good suggestion..

    • Lots of varied trails
    • Close to both Gatwick and Heathrow
    • Couple of locals 5c0tty and Chinaman (good to see u at the weekend dude)
    • Local Nicolai shop
    • Easyish for peeps to get to
    • Quite few quintessential English pubs for a cheeky mid ride pint / orange juice

I was there on Sunday and its about as good as it gets in the SE (everything is relative of course ). 5c0tty see if the guys inth HFTH are keen as they ride Nics i belive?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyDEWfvBF0w

Thats a good vid of summer lightening which is one of my fave trails we can hit

My vote is for either the 7/8 or 21/22 are sweet for me!

I say yey, lets do it!

Cool that you wanna pick me up Whafe. I have to say though, from any London airport via Cambridge to Dorking is a bit of a detour. Check it on Google maps. Can rent a car myself if you'd rather not clock up the extra milage? Or I can rent a car and come and pick you up from the airport (Stansted is pretty much on route from Cambridge to Dorking)?

Stansted to Cambridge is about a 30 minutes drive. I was going to pay my fair share anyways , so it's just if you want to spend an extra hour in the car. No worries picking you up either, so let me know what suits you best.

Cool, let's do that then. I'll have a look into the rental car scene here Must fit two bikes, and some luggage. I guess if we take the wheels off the bikes, it should fit in a reasonably sized estate. Oh what fun, the right hand drive gear changes...

So as it stands now, am booked to fly to Stansted on Friday 6th June, if it suits we can drive to the trail area on the Friday evening etc or I will stay at the airport in the hotel there and we travel on Saturday morning.

I then depart Stansted on Sunday 8th at 6 in the PM

Good to go, feels good to have it fully booked and sorted.

Bozzzzz let me know if you want to drive to the trail area on the Friday or Saturday morning?

    Yeah ha.....

Alright! I'll come and pick you up on Friday evening Whafe, you don't want to stay in Stansted any longer than strictly necessary . Plus, it gives us more riding time on Saturday. We need to sort out a B&B as well. 5c0tty, maybe you can give us some cheap & cheerful recommendations? Or we all crash at your place . So as it stands, we've got Karve, 5c0tty, Whafe and me that are up for it?

I'll pm you my details Whafe.

I sure do bro, Mia is the most important woman in my life. Thank you though for keeping an eye on me.

Mia has had her arm in a cast, not bad for a 20 month old beautiful girl to be in a cast. Started falling off the bike early like her father.....
