    650b Ion 16

I heard a few rumors on the German forums and with Eurobike round the corner......

How long do you think it will be till we see a production option for the

    - 650b Ion 16 ????

It must be coming at some point 650b does seem to be taking over for 2014!

If it has as much travel as the 26" ION 16 it could be an ENDURO/AM game changer!!

There is no doubt about this, it will be a reality.

@jjkitt, at 150mm I feel that about my Ion 29, it is soooo fast on Enduro style stages and the agility is just fantastic. Trail figures are within 1mm of an Ion16 and the wheelbase is almost the same too..just with big wheel roll and pedalling speed!

4sure, was just commenting on your post @ #6 about eurobike. if that was in regard to ion16 + 650b it will not be at eurobike 2013.

Well raschaa you are clearly right, and I am surprised that they would introduce a 650b Ion20 before a 650b Ion16 in the current market. I knew that model was due but also that the Ion16 650b was too. I was under the impression the 16 was one of, if not the, most sought after model at the moment. enduro is on the rise and in the spotlight, and the 16 or my 29 are both ideally suited hence them being tested side by side. Also the most publicised forks etc are in the Ion16 range.

For me the 16 would have been a priority to offer in the new 650b size to put Nicolai out there at the front of the curve. ( I am not a fan of how 650b has gained favour or indeed how relevant it is BUT there is no doubt that at the high end, where Nicolai is, 26 is dead going forward for most new customers, customers in the main are fearful of a 26" bike being obsolete.

I would want to be in the market with my most successful/appealing models as quickly as possible, with the rest to follow. Even if I was not yet geared up for production I would be showing the prototypes like the Ion 16 650 and 29, even if just the race bikes to show what Nicolai are doing..

I think the TB29 is a good development (I asked for one 2 years ago in effect but was told no it couldn't be done ;-)

Of course one always has to balance existing orders and how they could be impacted by 'possible new model' syndrome. Hmmm. Keeps me thinking anyway.

I was going off the pre Eurobike list for the birthday celebrations this weekend. Which I would have liked to be there for but I can't make it. My wife would go mad if I made another trip there!

I only want Nicolai to continue to be successful!

There will be a lot of 650b Enduro bikes shown and also some of the recent 29er long travel Enduro bikes too (e.g BMC Trailfox announced this week, recent Trek Remedy 29, Specialized Enduro 29, Intense (may not be there)

Having worked with me to develop a long travel 29er Ion for Enduro and made a team development frame, it would be a shame not to publicise it Ben just to show what they can do, no matter if they choose not to make it production!

Be awesome to see one there. I'm 99% sure I'm ordering a 650b Ion 16 when they come out. Sooner the better!!

You wont be able to move for 650b at Eurobike.....

Def. want to bag one of the first 650b Ion 16 in the New Year, but that means pre ordering blind without a geometry sheet.

That's a lot of cash to drop 'if' they get it wrong......I'm sure the geometry will be very very similar to the current ion 16 but not knowing the bb drop concerns me with up front ordering.

Please be a -15mm bb drop.

I wish they would release the details... I'm thinking it's time to replace my Helius AM and I'm tempted to go for slightly larger wheels.

Hopefully the Ion16 650b geometry and tech sheet is not far away. They are available to order and on the production spreadsheet

Fingers crossed they will be along soon

Seems a bit bizarre how the top tube on the Large is 15mm longer than the 26" version and yet the Medium is the same lenght???

Could be a typo. I know the gaps were going to be similar and based off the Large at 625mm. That's a bit short for a med. IMHO.

    Tried Dippers 29 yet Pimpmessiah?

The large size is ideal, actually perfect length top tube. I wish more manufactures would spec a descent length top tube like Nicolai.

These type of bikes should be run with max 50mm stems and the long top tube on the large enables this.

    Bravo Nicolai

Totally agree about the tt length, how do feel about the seat tube length though? At 460mm/18.1" it seems a little short

Marcel @ Nicolai has told me new TT lengths are designed for 35-50mm stems.

I want a longer top tube, but maybe not that much!

I already run a 45mm stem on my AM with a 585mm top tube, the Medium Ion 16 27.5 would only add 5mm to that which is not enough, but the large would add a wopping 40mm.

I keep meaning to ask Marcel about that difference. It was not what he suggested would be the case when we discussed the proto. I wonder if its a typo for the med?
I would have expected it to be 600mm or 605mm for a med. much like the 29s.
    I'm just under 5'11"/178cm and run 605mm TT with 50mm stem/800mm bars.

605mm as on the Ion 15 would make more sense to me... with the bonus that I could keep with a Medium frame. Medium frames always look better

    Edit. Medium Ion 15 is 600. Large Ion 16 26 is 610.

I'll try Dippers and see how the longer top tube works... it might be good.

Dipper is running a 610, mine is 605, but both have 470mm seat tubes.

@pimpmessiah On the production Ion15 the ST is 0.5deg steeper and the CS 7mm shorter. You could get away with moving your saddle back the 5mm on the med to bring the effective ST angle back a touch without affecting the handling and run a 50mm stem.

I run 50mm as the Easton 35 only comes in 50mm (Cant go much shorter wihout rise as there's not much between the steerer and bar!) 605 was just right for me with an 800mm bar. I needed the TT 5-10mm longer when I was running a 750mm bar.

Its gonna sound weird but if you run a 160mm fork rather than the reference 150mm it also adds about 4mm to the effective TT after compensating for sag...I'd better scurry of to the 29 threads, sorry to derail a bit chaps, but its all Nicolai innit :-)

I emailed Vincent... the medium Ion 16 27.5 has a 600mm top tube and the tech sheet has been updated.

    Yay!
