NorCal High school MTB at Granite Bay

350 High school Racers and their entourage descended on the Granite Bay Course and everyone is sunburned today. It was gorgeous. The course was modified to eliminate the mad sprint to the singletrack for safety reasons. The new start was an uphill run off of the sandy lake bed which looked like a stampede of buffalos. It worked really well to spread everyone out. It was great day of racing with a new Varsity Leader, Nate Byrom.
There are so many stories to tell. You really have to see this. Next race is at Grant's Ranch on March 30. Put it on your calendar and bring your own little shredder to see what they can look forward to when they get to High school.

    Hi Mike,

Wow, what an excellent racing. I see some familiar names are battling for the varsity championship. Congrats to Nate. He's great and so are his close competitors. Is Christine Weir related to Mark Weir of Downieville fame? I would have gone to watch the March 30 race at Grant's Ranch, if I had not promised Menso I'd drive down with him to race the first NORBA race in Fontana that weekend.

That was one fun race! Nevada Union really surprised us with a jump from 4th last race to 1st place at Granite Bay beating us, Drake, by 7pts! (3884 - 3877 = 7)

I myself got 18th in JV Boys and had my best race ever, and I heard that a Varsity rider, if this is true, help the guy who was in 1st during the race pick up his things after he tumbled.

Congratulations to Nate and his combo of 1st place + a pink bike. Sickest thing ever.

Hey Mike, just to answer your questions Christine isn't related to Mark Weir. She is only a sophmore but has proven herself a worthy advisary in the varsity group. I am so proud of her, I must confess that sometimes I have a hard time keeping up with her on the climbs. I heard that the race was fairly close, glad to hear everyone had a good time.

    Michael,

Some of the H.S. grads are showing up for the UCDavis collegiate races at Boggs!
It's great to see them continue to grow with the sport.

I'll look forward to the championship race at Boggs in may.

    Keep up the great work,
    Tim

    Say Uncle!

Great to hear from you. My son, Miguel, is now racing for Albany, feeling pain and having a ball. He took a 10th last week in a very competitive frosh 900 group.
I look forward to seeing you at Boggs as always.

I go for my first training ride with the Mt. Diablo Composite team tomorrow. I understand they had some racers there that did fairly well.

Sparky and I passed several carloads of folks headed up to GB on our way to Cool. At first we thought they were going to cool but then I noticed a NorCal sticker on one vehicle and remembered...

    CCC did very well.

They are a Division 2 club with some race experience and had 4 in the top 25 in JV with a victory and 2 in the top 5 there. They had only 1 Soph racer and he finished and one frosh/soph Girls who had a nice 3rd. One Frosh Boys had a nice finish in the 20's.

    All the results are here:

It was a good race! I crashed second lap (out of four) on the first uphill (dont even start) I don't know how I just did and it was hard and really funny. So hard I slapped my skid lid on the ground, my glasses flew off, my pump fell out of my pocket, and my handlebars twisted around. I quickly got up and John Bennet (who was right on my tail) said something about my stuff and I just told him to leave it. Next thing I knew he was handing me my stuff as we were riding along. That was super cool, THANKS.

The start was unique to say the least. But it worked out until my crash.

It was a great race. I took 2nd in sophomore boys D2. It was a really fun course though, way better than the one at Ord. Berkley Mike- I think I might know you, I definately know Miguel, I was with the Albany Team for that race because my team (Oakland Composite) doesn't really have a tent or anything.

Check your helmet for cracks. They're only made for one crash.

    Of course I know you.

We also talked near start/finish for quite a while. You felt as if you had been blocked. We will keep an eye on that. It is best to identify the rider if you can and let the League deal with it rather than some frontier justice, as satisfying as that may be.

I found an image of Nate crossing the finish line.

It's not my best but it makes the point. Congrats, Nate. PM me with your email and I will send you the large file.
