I did read the link first. Any idea where the funding would come from to add mtn. biking to school district budgets since many districts have already been cutting other sports over the last few years? This isn't meant to sound like or be an a-hole, I work in a school and coach a sport that was almost cut this year (and obviously mtn. bike as well) - so I know that in many schools there is no money to add additional programs. Just didn't know if there was funding going to be available for schools that are interested in adding this type of program.

No worries, schools all across this nation have similar budget problems.

When you work with a national organization you have solutions.

Contact Tyler to find out how other schools work mountain biking into their schedule:

Thanks, I'm an hour from Windham and the school that I work at is closer so I'll see if I can make the presentation next weekend. We have trails accessible to kids but the school is one of the poorest in the state so many of the kids probably don't even have wal-mart bikes to ride.

Wonder why the schools in the North Country don't have cycling on their sport programs being on the mountains and having ski teams.

Noticed that Vermont does and when they come to the ADKs to race always do better than the local kids.

To bring a bike program to your school, you can contact www.bikenewyork.org and they will also provide your school with a fleet of loaner bikes. This program will teach bike safety skills that is integrated into your school's PE class.

Contact Rich Conroy the education programs director.

As far as getting mountain bikes for your new bike league, there are grants available.

Cool, thanks for the info. I would just love to get some of these kids outside on bikes for a day after-school to start with.

That meeting went really really well. Typically a bunch of mt bikers get to talking and it ran well over the allotted time but quite a bit got accomplished. I'm excited for the possibilities! I want to thank Zack from Bicycling Magazine for providing the place and equipment to facilitate a very professionally run meeting.
