Congratulations Cal Poly: 4th place in Collegiates

What a great weekend of Collegiate Nationals racing at Northstar. Cal Poly was the only West Coast school on the team Omnium podium with an impressive fourth place. If only more women would study engineering and take up mountain biking, they could have taken on the mountain state universities.

    USA cycling article

Menso competed in a punishing cross country race on Friday, an exhilarating Short Track and 4 cross on Saturday and Downhill on Sunday to take a close 2nd place in the individual Omnium. He was joined on the podium by two other California all rounders: Nate and Nitish. Well done, guys!

    1. Nicholas Enjalbert (Colorado State University)
    2. Menso De Jong (California Polytechnic)
    3. Nate Byrom (Fort Lewis College)
    4. Nitish Nag (University of California)

Congratulations are in order. I would buy him some Pliny but I don't think he's of age. I'll buy it anyway and drink it in his honor.

We need to give Menso a nickname now that he's going pro.

How about "The Beast"? I saw part of the Short Track while waiting in the gondola line and saw Menso ride by a few times. He isn't the typical tall skinny guy. He is a big guy with a HUGE motor. What a Beast!

It was a real team effort for the Cal Poly team. The top three finishers for each school in each category score points for the team:
Nate Lewis 2nd in DH - that's really fast!
Kyle Wideman 6th in DH and 17th in 4X
Josef Duller 7th in DH and 23rd in 4X
Owen Raybould (11th in DH) 19th in 4X
Menso de Jong 3rd in XC and 4th is ST
Chris Convis 17th in XC and 28th in ST
Chris Jackson 20th in XC and 26th in ST
They had some great women riders too:
Sally Hermansen 29th in XC, 22nd in ST, 19th in DH and 8th in 4X Wow!
Catherine Cresalia 32nd in XC, 20th in ST, 12th in DH and 17th in 4X. Impressive!
Kathleen Kramer 14th in DH and 18th in 4X
Bridget Zapata 24th in XC and 21st in ST
    Well done everybody!

And they had the valuable support of the Cal Poly cheering squad. Yep, I'd try to go faster as well to get away from this bunch.....

That means you're old enough to buy your own beer. Start with Heineken

Let's get together when you're in town and I'll get you some Belgian. You need to inspire my kids and my crazy dog.

Owen also placed 11th in the DH race. Here's a few of my photos from the weekend.
