    Any Collegiate DH'ers out there?

My school is going to have a MTB team in 09 and I will be doing downhill in the Rocky Mountain Conference. Anyone out there that can give me a feel for what to expect. Thanks and peace

bummer. you guys put on a sweet race out at Boggs...

as far as what to expect for collegiate racing? expect a wide range of skill levels, and a high potential for fun, pointless shenanigans, and cool people.

that is, unless the rocky mountain conference is full of prudes that don't know how to party like the west coast conference. doubt that though...

i joined the team right when the mountain season got cancelled. didnt race road. now this year there is no mountain team. might as well race road to stay in shape and hang out with the team. good thing is that i wont take road so seriously so i can just focus on having fun. ... even though it is ust road after all.

I attend Western Washington University, and our team is a school "club", so there are no try outs. If you want to race, you're in.

never been remotely interested in road. helped out at our race because the club requires it, but other than that I'm all mountain. great fun at the mountain stuff though.

why's the team disbanding for next year? seems odd to me, since you only need like 3 people to make a team. that way you can race, even if you aren't going to be competitive (I mean, c'mon, cal poly just dominates mountain season )

some stuff went down. im not sure if im allowed to say what or why. but we were basically suspended for this year. supposedly we were "lucky" to have our road team.

i NEVER cared for road either. it wasnt until i found myself with absolutely nothing to do that i figured i'd give it a shot. in no way am i becomming a roadie... just riding with them. hopefully i can convert the roadies on our team and bring them to the dark side.

Linga115, hit me up if you want to go shred with us, couple of us Davis types ride DH once or twice a week.

Anyway, guess back OT, I wouldn't really know, since the year I was gonna join the UC Davis bike team it got disbanded because of some retarded porn thing at an XC race, and I'm sure as sh!t not riding road instead of DH! Hopefully its fun though!

i dont have a car so i ride whatever other people ride. if i could get out to the trails i would. so really im not riding road instead of im just riding whats availible to me. i'd rather be on a bike than even if its a road bike rather than not being on one at all... besides i ride a road bike to commute and ive taken that thing of a few off road spots. just because its a road bike, doesnt mean itll stay on the road

same story with joining the team as you. i didnt wanna mention the porn thing because i wasnt sure if we were allowed to mention that.

wait, you guys got tagged for the porn thing this year? that's lame. I remember it from last year (and laughing my ass off as I struggled by them during that race. damn pedaling), and remember a big hoopla, but didn't think any punishment was handed down. I recall a VERY stern warning about that kind of thing happening (which is BS IMO since there's nothing that you davis guys coulda done about it).

I'm guessing something else must've happened at your race this year. probably in regard to something going on that saturday night. whatever. you guys should show up and race norba anyway. just because you aren't on an official team, doesn't mean you can't race and have fun.

I'm pretty sure that 95% of the racers (pretty much everyone collegiate), didn't give a crap. that was a norba race though, so I think there were some younger children racing, and their parents were a bit displeased with the showing.

I wish I had raced for CSU when I was in school - I know a lot of the racers from the local school here, Mesa State, and it seems like one helluva time. There are some very good DHers racing in that conference (Fort Lewis, CS Mines, Western State, CU, and more).

yep... pretty lame that they suspended our whole team. then we eventually got the roadies back since it was a mountain race. i guess the pictures were enough to piss off some big wig and they shut us down. what sucks is it was posted by someone who was not on our team... an alumni i think.

anyways, we can still race but we cant wear anything to do with our school.

    Chico State

    I raced for them back in 98 - 02.

Great times on the team. To answer the original question. You can expect whatever you want to get out of it. Most teams, with the exception of Stanford, are fully student run and pretty all inclusive. No offense meant to Stanford by the way, they just took it pretty seriously, it seemed.

In my case it negated the need whatsoever in joining the Greek system, because you have a built in set of friends that like to do what you like to do.

You can train and race seriously in the A category or not train and just have fun and race in the C category.

If you are into Mountain Biking and go to college, I highly recommend joining your club team.

Collegiate racing is pretty fun, really fun actually. Natty Champs is just a 3 day long party. However the top 10-20 riders are going to be racing for real, no joke.
