State Parks Expanding in the Gunks

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/16/ny...grow.html?_r=0

Not sure if this link is working but it is from the NY Times about the state about to acquire Sams Point and the Ice Caves area. I wonder if this will open these areas to bikes? I saw the $500,000 "improvement" to Hamilton Point Carriageway and while I liked the old trail much better, at least this may now be open for bikes again.

That would be nice, its stunning terrain- but doubtful. That is hiking club motherland, overwatched by notoriously anti-bike New York State Parks. A different management than at our smaller parks aka Multiple Use Areas.

On a lighter note, Mohonk has built its first mtb purpose built singletrack that is swoopy & fun, with more coming.

How long is the mohonk single track? Where do you enter the trail?

I may take a ride out there if it is worth the drive.

I think you are right about not getting into Sams Point, but when I was last at Minnewaska on Nov. 2&3, I asked if we could use the carriage road that came off Lake Awosting. That's the road that comes off behind the cabin. Bikes can only use carriage roads, and that's a carriage road. The answer was yes we can. Looking at a map, I see that is Smiley Carriage Road. One could ride this to Ellenville. One could also pick up Stony Kill Carriage Road, and High Point Carriage Road. I hope to explore during the summer months, if I can get up to New Paltz.

    Ride Smileys! Its epic!
It is not singletrack, and not well drained or designed!
