Probable relocation to Syracuse, q's

Will prolly take a job offer in Syracuse and got several questions regarding where to look for housing, schools and off course riding.

1) Where will be a good place to live? Will be working near Old Liverpool Road and would like to buy/rent a place in a neighborhood that my kids will enjoy (15-17 y/o) and with a good school. Heard that Liverpool is nice, any other suggestions?

2) Are there trails in or near Syracuse other than the Cranx park? We own mountain and road bikes but prefer the dirt.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

1. Liverpool schools are good, plenty of sports/music/etc for the kids.

2. Highland Forest and Great Bear are excellent places to ride.

Bike Loft and CNYDirt have info on rides/trail maintenance, great shop also.

A lot of good public schools in the area, plus plenty of excellent off road and road riding.

We generally have cold snowy winters, but if you don't ski or board, there is Cranx opening soon - as you mentioned.

Here is a list of some of the trails from the CNY Dirt site, sponsored by Bike Loft

Here is link to the local road bike club.

One area you might want to check for housing is Radisson Community PUD

There isn't a ton of riding in the area but I think what we have is pretty good. Great Bear is good for short ride, Highland Forest for longer more challenging rides and probably best of all only an hour hour away is Shindagin in Ithaca. Well worth the drive.

Don't forget Sky Top up above SU campus. Most technical in the vicinity.

Agreed that Shindagin is the best around.

I haven't been to Sky Top in years and I don't know why. It's much closer than Shindagin for me. How rideable is Sky Top these days anyway? In terms of jumps, drops etc. I enjoy a good technical ride but prefer to keep my wheels on the ground for the most part.

The thing about Sky Top is with its high location in the bedrock, the soil is dry there when Highland, Great Bear, Bear Swamp and even Shindagin are quagmires. It's the best place for spring and fall riding, and after rainstorms. You can do a very technical ride with your wheels on the ground; plenty challenging of rocks and roots to keep you on your toes; lot of singletrack. That's how I ride. A 2 foot drop is my wimpy limit for air. But for the skilled freeriders and dirt jumpers, there insane steep lines, huge earth jumps that the locals keep maintained, as well as wooden gaps, wooden rails and drops in the 5 - 10 foot range, everything bored college kids can think up to kill themselves while old farts like me just watch. With the lack of snow this winter, my group has continued to ride there to date. Some are going out with lights on Wednesday.

Another rocky place, but less terrain than Sky Top, is Split Rock in Camillus. That's my default area after work in the summer because it's 10 minutes from where I work

I lived in Liverpool, it's nice there. Lots of snow, multiple bike shops, good shopping. The mall they have is huge. I'm not familiar with the neighborhoods any more but I lived off soule rd, (spelling?) there are many communities in that area

I'm from Baldwinsville myself (just NE of Liverpool, high school rivals). There are a good amount of places to ride, enough to keep you relatively busy. A work buddy rides every Wednesday at Green Lakes which is just outside of the city, I'm looking to join him this year for a weekly ride.

Have fun, despite what many people will say the snow isn't so bad and CNY is a great place to live...I've been here all my life!

Took the job, will work in Liverpool and currently browsing around Baldwinsville; in the mean time will commute from Old Forge.

Congrats on the new gig! Baldwinsville is a great place, like I said I've been here all my life. If you'd like some opinions on neighborhoods/locations etc feel free to ask.

Syracuse

I have lived and been active in the Syracuse/Central NY area for 50 years. Its great area. Lots of opportunities for fun and recreation. Don't get hung up on any particular area unless you have kids that you want to get into a better college. then I might recommend Baldwinsville or Manlius school district. However they are also the highest tax areas. The city on the other hand is a great place for cheap housing if your not planning on entertaining in your yard much. (Yards are small like any city). But big city houses are $100K, and $700 in yearly taxes. In the suburbs the Houses are $300k and taxes are $8K.

Just my 2 cents... The nicest place to live is near SU, many convenient rides and lots to do.

The village is high in taxes, what are the areas close but with lower taxes?
