I would like to get into racing

I live in delaware county N.Y. and would like to enter some xc races in the spring. Anyone have any advice on groups or clubs I should race with? What is the best way to get started with races?
I am new to mountain biking this year but have ridden alot on the road before this year. Just looking to step my fitness up to the next level and some competion always seems to help with that.
Not sure if this should be in the xc forum so I may post it on both forums.

    Ride, ride, ride.

Enter as a CAT3 and go out there to have fun and see how it feels to push yourself in "race conditions."

If you like it, race more.

What you need will become more and more clear if you decide you like it and want to stay with it.

Check out the Black Fly Challenge (this year Inlet to Indian Lake) more of a rough dirt road with some pavement. 40 miles, laid back atmosphere. Good time.

If you want to get some killer riding in pop up to Oneonta. The group there rides every Sunday at 9 AM provided there's not too much snow to do so. Pace depends on who shows up with the rule being not to leave anyone for the coyotes.

Oneonta has plenty of hills to whip you into shape, a great mix of smooth and technical trails, great people of all abilities to ride with and an excellent local bike shop.

Check out Ed at Otsego Bicycles; he can set you up with the right people. He's super friendly and knows his stuff. Or shoot me a PM and I can do the same.

Black Fly sounds cool. I am going to do that this year.

The oneonta group has my interest. I have met some people that rode with that group. I just haven't gotten on their email list (is that how they notify everyone?).
