    Trails usable during hunting season

With hunting season afoot, what trail systems are hunting free? I know Lippman park and Walnut are both good. I believe Ferncliff as well.

Skytop, Green Lakes State Park and Great Bear in Syracuse, Colgate University in Hamilton, Hamilton College in Clinton, Stoney Pond State Park in Erieville, Sherrill Brook Park in New Hartford, Dryer Road Park in Victor, Chenango Valley State Park in Chenango Forks.

Not sure about Shindagin Hollow State Forest in Brooktondale.

Just make sure that you wear bright clothes and make enough noise, bear bells are great for that.

I ride private and club trails with proper access and state trails and I always wear a red jersey and helmet with a blaze orange scarf-like thing.
Also have a couple of jingle bells I attach to my Camelback.
Better safe than sorry anywhere you ride during hunting season.

I get so frustrated every Oct 1 .. I live 10 minutes from stewart state forest, my favorite place to ride. Guess I'll do Lippman on weekends and maybe check out camp orange.

Likewise. Stewy's is 15 minutes from me. Lippman is my stoming ground though. Camp orange looks promising, close enough to work.

Has anyone actually seen anyone hunting at Stewart?

I like the idea of wearing bright orange and jingle bells. I almost got shot by a bow hunter years ago when I was riding in Georgia and I'd prefer to avoid that experience again.

It's not exciting at all, but I sometimes ride black rock forest near Cornwall. You aren't allowed to ride the single track trails, but it beats being stuck to the pavement. There are some pretty long climbs that I like to work on. It's all dirt road in various states of repair.

You will see hunters at Stewart for small game but not as many as when Big Game season is open. Black Rock does have hunting and I think they close the park during big game season. You used to have to join a club to ride at Black Rock but I dont know if that is still the case. One option to ride through hunting season is to get some lights and ride at night.

What about further south? I believe 909 is open to hunters, but Blue is not (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Yorktown, all three sections - Woodlands, Granite Knolls and Sylvan Glen are no hunting and it's a very short pedalable connection to the (open to mtb) trails in FDR State Park which is also no hunting. I'm not sure about the trails in French Hill but they are also connectable and as far as I know closed to hunting.

In Patterson NY the trails are open to hunting in both Merrit/Ciaola and Cranberry Mt so wear orange. CT is no hunting on Sundays.

No "legal" hunting in Westchester bike parks however there's poachers so beware.

Is hunting limited at night? I've always known hunters to go out first thing in the morning, not at night, but I don't know if that's the reasoning behind it.

"Legally", hunting for most species is between sunrise and sunset so you shouldn't be bumping into hunters after dark is what the above poster is assuming.
That, and I've yet to see a whitetail with a headlight so you should be good.

Oneonta is good to go....and raked!

Most of Oneonta's trails are good to go during deer season. These include:

    SUNY Oneonta College Camp
    Wilber Park/Oneonta High School
    Catella Park/New Island
    Homer Folks Forest

Trails are pretty spider-webbed, but each of those areas on its own is good for an hour or two; each system is mapped and marked, and the locals have been working on getting more trails posted into MTBPROJECT. The only but off-limits is MabenLand Private Property which unmarked, unmapped, and out of the way of the public trails. Put everything together and you have a solid 30+ mile ride and can end at Roots Brewing Company on Main St.
