New Paltz / Ellenville area: Awosting / Smiley Carriageway?

I used to ride this trail two or three times a year in the early 90's. The Awosting side was a gravel boulevard, but the summit crossover was wilderness, and the Smiley descent into Ellenville was a boulder strewn hell ride of fun and frustration.

Are people still riding this? I was poking around looking for information and saw on a hiking forum that there were major "improvements" on the Smiley side in 2006 or so.

    Any information on this? Thanks!

Well Lower Awosting Carriageway is closed right now, for repairs presumably. I don't know why, but I imagine it's because of erosion. Minnewaska carriage trails drain pretty poorly, and they tend to dump gravel on them as a quick fix.

Sounds interesting though - I've been looking for a long-ish wilderness ride in the area.

Someone asked this not too long ago on the fats in the cats website I think. I rode most of it several years ago and parts of it were extremely rough, almost unrideable. No maintenance has been done in decades, I can only imagine it's even rougher now.
