... and if we just ... Public Meet for the Placitas Area Trails Project

The National Forest Service will conduct a public meeting scheduled for Monday, June 17th at the Placitas Senior Center from 7pm to 8:30pm. The goal for the meeting will be to provide additional information on the proposed action and allow folks to ask questions regarding the proposed action so they can better prepare/submit comments. In addition, there will be an opportunity to submit written comments at the meeting

It is very important that as many trail users as possible show up to support the plan. Check out the map below for directions. See you there!

Placitas Area Trail Project Public Meeting Wrap Up

The public meeting on Placitas Area Trails Project was a great success! Many PATA members showed up to support the plan. It was surprising how calm and positive the meeting went. This can be attributed to how well Kerry Wood and the rest of the USFS people ran the meeting. The USFS has a well define process for planning, scoping, and approving proposed action such as the Placitas Area Trails Project. They spent time defining the process and then opened the floor for people to ask questions. This was not a public forum to comment or argue, but to ask questions about the project and to get clarifications. The questions asked were good ones and at no time were there any heated exchanges.

The project is currently in the scoping phase and the public can comment on the project as it is currently proposed until July 8th. Comments given now have more weight as they can guide the final proposal before it is released. Once the final proposal is released, there is an additional comment period prior to ratification of the proposed action. It was apparent from the meeting that while public input on the project is welcome, comments need to follow a few rules to be meaningful.

Comments should be a specific and detailed as possible. Saying the proposed action is cool or bad is not very helpful.
Comments can be about things that you would like to see done, done differently, or items in the plan you like and why you like them
Comments outside of the scope of the project will be filed for later reference. The impression was that constructive out of scope comments are good but frivolous ones would be sent to file 13
Commenting before ratification of the proposed action gives a person the right to engage the USFS on the proposed action before and after ratification. Only commenting after ratification is a waste of time.

So send your comments soon! Comments are part of the public record and will be available for public inspection. Please include your name and address with your comments. There are three ways to submit your comments
