The picture is of the start. The year I did it, the race started and finished in a picnic ground p-lot that provided about 100yds of pavement before the entire field funneled into singletrack. If there was ever a race that needed more road on the way to the singletrack, it was this one, the year I did it. Biggest clustrf*k I've ever seen by a long shot. Hopefully that's no longer the case.
Other than the start/finish, there's about 100yds of pavement that connects two trailheads. The rest of the course (15+mi/lap) is off-road, and the vast majority is s/t. Palo Duro Canyon is actually a beautiful place to ride, and if it was within 30min of Alb, the foothills would be grown over in weeds. If you want to see worthwhile pictures, look up Palo Duro Canyon S.P.

I could e-mail anyone that's interested a Garmin .tcx file of the '10 course. In short, the '10 course was a 15+mi lap with just under 1100' of climbing. But the range of elevation was only about 2800' to 2950', so there are a lot of little punchy climbs. It's a fast course - on the opposite end of the spectrum from the Puzzler.
