People like to talk shit, it is the internet afterall, but Otero(particularly the main canyon downhill) is one of the best and most fun trails I have ever ridden and it's because of all the little details.
I am willing to bet there are very very few people that are capable of utilizing the features on these trails that choose not to out of some moral superiority complex.
The features get used, but the makers get judged. Convenient.

I would prefer all of "the good stuff" get legitimized, but you know, life, chickens, eggs, etc.

Taking my first trip to the Otero area today. I only plan on staying a few hours, which trail should I ride if i'm looking for some fast downhill? Thanks.

Awesomeness! It's been raining-snowing for the last hour or so. Trails were starting to get pretty dry and dusty. More rain expected Sun.

It looks pretty good now. I'm going to give it until about 10 am. More to let the chill get out of the air than to let things dry up.

That's about what I was thinking. A crap load of rain has left things pretty soft. I'm going to try to ride over here tomorrow. Some sunshine today will help a lot.

Over an inch of rain overnight in the Otero area. I can't remember the last time we had this kind of moisture in May. Pretty muddy right now and that's AWESOME.

With rain off and on all day and more to come, you can pretty much count out the East Mtns for your ride tomorrow. Mud will be bad. Unless you don't like kittens that is.

Any chance it will be dry enough this afternoon (Sunday) to ride? Or should I count on doing the foothills?

Any more info on conditions? I didn't ride out there today due to the moisture, however was thinking about riding an E Mountains loop tomorrow morning if the conditions were better.

Sorry to take so long to reply. Otero conditions as of Saturday at 9:30 AM were absolutely killer! Almost no mud and nice tacky dirt all the way to 3 Bottles, Southern Crossings, beyond and back.

No worries. My friend and I assumed that conditions would be good and weren't disappointed. The dirt was so good you would have thought it was monsoon season. Hit it while the conditions are good everyone!

Well trail conditions are obviously perfect right now so go ride your bike.

At about 1100 am today an approximately 300 lb healthy brown bear ran across the trail about 100 feet in front of me and hauled ass down in to otero proper.
I didn't see any cubs and I think this was a male bear.
He was running west, downhill from just North of the drop in and west boundary intersection.
He looked really friendly and I think he wanted to be friends but he had somewhere to go.
He's on your turf B. maybe you and him can be friends. Heads up.

Haha. Then when I got back to my truck a rattlesnake was giving me a warning. I looked all around but couldn't find it.

So, umm what is all this about? Perhaps about whoever vandalized all the jumps on upper otero? I followed a group of motos down upper otero today and watched as a couple of them rolled over one of the ruined jumps spitting basketball sized rocks onto the trail which only served to solidify my fiery hatred of the dickholes who ride motos.

This is all sounding very hush hush but if this is a safety issue from vandalized features I think everybody would appreciate a heads up on which ones and where. Even if you already fixed them it would be nice to know where to keep an eye out for repeat offenders.

It seems like every group is judged by its worst actors. Unfortunately they are the folks you remember.

The motos hate the ATVs because a few turn single track into wide track.

The MTB'ers hate the motos because a few pass too fast and intentionally tear up the ground.

The hikers hate the MTB'ers because a few pass too fast and build artificial features judged displeasing.

The wilderness purists hate the hikers because they walk on the land.

Isn't it great living in a plurality? As a moto and MTB rider I try to be a good emissary. I appreciate it when folks don't judge me by some of the bad experiences they have had with other riders.

Yeah I was just trying to figure out if features were sabotaged in such a way to cause crashes and such. Didn't seem like it was just moto's tearing up some jump lips.

Intent would be difficult to assess, but if one were to roll through and hit the "vandalized" feature, the modifications surely would make a successful exit all that more difficult.

Really, it didn't look like moto abuse. It looked dismantled.

Goat you wont do trail days because you dont want to meet any moto riders? But you ride the trail 3 times a week?
Personally Id rather meet a moto guy at a trail day and introduce myself. So when I do see him on the trail its not nearly as confrontational when you know each others name.
Back to Otero conditions. As jerry said, The features were dismantled. By something with leverage or multiple people.

It's odd. I know in some areas the moto guys have a better relationship with MTBers because they are a driving force in trail building and maintenance and share the load pretty well. Guess I am not surprised just because New Mexicans don't seem to be super organized about anything. We have our moments though.

We got a fair amount of rain yesterday and last night. But nothing crazy like some areas. It's a little soft right now. Give it just a couple of extra hours of sun and should be good. I'm going to give it until around 10 or so.

We got another round of rain around 11pm. It is pretty soaked right now. The good news is the sun is out. I'll post early afternoon with how much it has dried up. With all this rain there will still be those usual areas that will stay on the muddy side for a few days.

Lots of mud on Otero. The upper drop also has changed quite a bit. Looks like the water dug it out some so stay far to the left. Landing on the lower drop is very soft.

Conditions this afternoon were surprisingly good. Signs of heavy rain, like rocks and dirt moved, but not too swampy in the usual places. Otero, Drop-in, Blue Ribbon all GTG.

The Otero area trail vandals drive a WHITE DODGE Sporty truck with a Dakine bike pad over the tailgate. Sad to say that they are Mtn Bikers. There are two of them. I've seen that truck in the Otero PL quite often. It was in the PL today as I went to town. Probably some more vandalism in there today. I will get pics of them and a pic of their truck and plate number and post it here and at Trailheads in the area. A$$ W!Pe$

Its not like the guy in the Dodge is damaging existing trails, he is simply cleaning up after Otero's troll. I get it, Bryan is bored with the standard Otero fare, but they are not his personal trails to sculpt as he pleases. The step down that was removed could have created some nasty crashes. The step down crossed an existing trail right at a point where the people climbing would have their heads down to focus on the climb. Otero needs features but not at the expense of the already existing trails. If he is such a dedicated trail builder why isn't he coordinating with Kerry to get some legitimate features built, or work on the 3B extension? He is just being selfish like usual.
Not to back him but he is working on the extension. You? I agree with the one you mentioned. But these guys say they will do more. I kind of like those features and done get in any ones way. They have left large rocks in the middle of the trail for one thing. I have a problem with these guys deciding what I can and can not ride. Sorry you don't agree, but a trail vandal is a trail vandal.

A real old-fashioned western range war but add in the USDA and USAF. How could this go badly?

Don't know about USAF but there has been several rocks strategically flipped over and little booters taken out, and tree branches placed on the FS side of things. Things that have been there for quite a few years That's troubling.

Yeppers that new gap jump, just built above the base sign on the trail is going to get someone seriously injured. Then the doody is really going to hit the fan when they have to be medivac't out.

Yeah I don't like seeing features for the 1% either man. It makes me feel inferior and then I go home and watch golden girls and eat ice cream till I cry myself to sleep. Should make more features for the 3%.

If we don't get anything overnight, it should be ok. There might be a few spots here and there. I'll post early if it rained much.

Should be another good day. WE did not get the rain that Albq. got yesterday. Only thing you might run into is the guys in the white Dodge Truck with the Dakine pad on the back that has continued to vandalize the trail in Otero inside the FS area. So much sanitation now. Sickening. A$$ wIpe$!!!! No way to defend these guys actions now!
