Mountain Lion Sighting in Otero Canyon!

Just letting everyone know we saw a mountain lion on Tuesday night, around 9pm at the very start of the trail head in Otero. As we were finishing up our ride, right as you get to the old paved road the high cliff to your left, there was a pair of large glowing eyes caused by our helmet lights. It stared for a bit, looked to the left and right a couple times, then walked off, and that's when we realized it was a large cat. From our estimation she or he was probably close to about 40-60 lbs. First time I've seen one while mountain biking out there! Was cool, but still gotta be careful!

That sounds pretty small for a cougar, are you sure it wasn't a bobcat? Adult female cougars average over 90 lbs, adult males average over 130 lbs.

There's been a cat out there for the last few years. Two years ago there was one with a kitten. Usually you see the tracks up closer to David Canyon and upper Otero. Last year it showed up at the little park you go by on Raven Rd. going to David Canyon. Thats awesome you got to see it. If I remember right, Bryan posted a pic of it a couple of years ago.

Well maybe it was hard to judge the weight and size cuz it was at night and up on top of a ridge, or maybe it was a younger one, but it was definitely not a bobcat, it had a long tail. The picture posted here looks A LOT like the one we saw! That's cool as heck that he got this picture of it!

Saw it again tonight, at least I think it was the same one. I admit I didn't see the body, but I saw the same glowing eyes around 9pm, right next to the parking lot over on the ridge (to your right if your heading towards the trail). I yelled and it startled it even though we were starring at each other. I finished up alone so I figured I'd just keep on going slowly but also keep watching. Well, no more Otero night rides for me for REALS this time HAHAH.
