New question here. Good XC Rides From Raton to Santa Fe

Got a friend looking for 2-4 days in NM wants to hit XC type stuff as he drops down from CO. I figure he can cut across to Taos from Raton, thru Red River/Angle Fire. Then he can head south to SFe.

What's NM's best along that corridor?

I know these trails, but what would you locals recommend?

    1. SBT
    2. Taos Rim Trail
    3. Dale Ball
    4. White Mesa (probably as far south as he would go)

Taos Rim sux. What is his fitness like? He could do EBT as well.
When is he coming? Weather is changing fast up here this year. We have some new trails out in the sagebrush that look great but I am saving them until the snow flys.

    Nate- congrats on the transfer.

He's low 50's, a strong Cat 2 mtb'er with good fitness. He's done the Ouachita Challenge (60 miles) and he's from Denver, so the altitude won't be a factor.

Skills wise.. he's a xc type who doesnt have a lot of confidence on technical terrain. He rides a Pivot 429.

Here is what he asked me:

I'm planning a short road trip that will likely take me through Taos and Santa Fe. Could be in the area for anywhere from 2 to 4 days. Where are the 'must ride' trails?

Looking for mostly XC, 2-3 hrs, up to maybe 5 hrs, sight seeing pace. And, no hucks or big drops, nothing that'll kill me or otherwise ruin a perfectly good, laid-back road trip. Something that if I end up riding alone it won't be like I'm risking dying in the back woods.
Thanks for the congrat's.. it's been a long time coming..

Is there a trail that runs up the canyon to the ski area from Santa Fe?

That would be Winsor. Runs from CR 72A near Tesuque to the bottom of the ski basin. It's a straight forward up/down (18 or so miles round trip) and a pretty good ride but there's better ones in that area IMO. When's he coming out? I'd be happy to show off our goods. Have him give me shout via PM if interested.
