Well we got buzzed by a couple of heli's yesterday at Otero This was a 'close encounter of the Worst kind'. They knew we were there! The copters actually stalked us . We tried to pay no mind to them as the gate that we went through was wide open and we absolutely saw no signs. I am talking about the green gate at at the intersection of the two new trails the names of which escape me at the moment.
Anyway, we just assumed that we would have a good argument if something should go down. It got real freaky though. Myself and another fella pushed the envelope a bit and stayed steady. They actually hovered perpendicular to the trail just above tree line, right in front of us. We decided very quickly that it was time to give up. We turned tail and got the hell out passing up the rest of the bunch who were still down trail. The heli's stayed with us, the lead group, for a while. We finally stopped to wait for the rest of the bunch. After about 5 minutes we were getting concerned as the heli's were hovering over one spot. We thought the worse! Had they possibly caught the last two of the bunch? Finally one of the guys showed up and informed us that my friend Sean had taken a bad spill and was headed straight down Otero. Just as he was explaining the wreck the Heli's took off down Otero. I guess following Sean down to the boundary. We hung around for a while discussing the "What If's" and continued on our loop to 3bottles. We saw the heli's a few more times. I assume they were doing the same thing to some other folks venturing into the "no mans land".
Honestly, I think they were running drills. Low-level training type stuff and we made a perfect target . Nevertheless, it was very intimidating.
My buddy Sean ended up with a few stitches and a sprained wrist but otherwise 'no foul'. ....and the moral of this story?
Here are few pics. Besides all of the drama, it was a great ride.
Just got back from riding in the Sea to Sky area (between Whistler & Vancouver). The riding there was insane.
I had a borrowed Giant Reign, which I found out is an excellent all-around bike for that area. The soil on the trails would roll like waves underneath my tires. The continuous flow of stunts & technical obstacles on steep terrain was just amazing. That place is infested with sick trails.
