^The gravel roads are rideable, and there's always drinking beer.

HDT in Gallup is fast... and as you can see in the pic, the Zuni Mts. are slowly drying out, but the low areas and drainages are still pretty sloppy. I rode the upper Strawberry Canyon Trail yesterday evening and it was dry but soft. We have been riding gravel up here but will check out some of the singletracks this weekend. It's been getting cold at night, low teens, which makes things dry up very slowly in the drainages and shaded areas.

A wild spring snowstorm on Wednesday night dumped 1 1/2", probaly take awhile to dry up as it is still freezing hard at night. I have been bushwacking and riding gravel.

Whaddaya' project for this coming weekend around for Quaking Aspen conditions? It's been real sunny. Will be in the area and hate to miss it but can bail to High Desert if necessary. Thanks!

^I think conditions will be good, excepting some running or wet drainages. The last wet spot on the Strawberry Canyon Trail was dry yesterday.

We (Gallup Trails) encourage bushwacking well around the occasional remaining soft sections.

Does anyone have a map of the trails in the Zunis? I know a guy from Albuquerque (TM) who had a contract with the USFS to map these trails, but I've never seen any maps. "The Zunis" is a large area; I'd love to know where the trailheads are. Thanks.

There is also the Zuni Mountain Trail Partnership which has some maps and files available. The files of old logging roads should be viewed carefully. Not everything that is indicated as a logging or forest road actually exists.

I was out riding on the southeastern end of the Zunis last weekend. Conditions were surprisingly dry. Some patches of snow in shadowy areas, but overwhelmingly GTG. Weather was kind of crazy and I got flurried on up around 8500 feet when the temp dropped to around freezing (started out in short sleeves) but then the sun came out again and all was right with the world.

Cool pics. I need to get out there and ride. I used to camp and fish at McGaffey with my dad when I was a kid.

Not much, just a big puddle. No runoff this spring.
