    Good job! Bikes -n- Beer

Not only is ABQ a #1 place to ride a bike, but it's breweries have made it a #1 "off the beaten path" city to enjoy great locally brewed beer:

*Kelly's really doesn't belong on the list, and La Cumbre should be the #1 mention.

Kelly's is possibly the worst beer + food place I have ever been, and it's expensive! They would be long gone if they didn't have a patio. Patios (for some reason) make any establishment golden in ABQ.

New brewery opening soon(ish). Looks like they are having a SuperBowl party even though they are not officially open yet:

I was glad to see my side of the world represented with Turtle Mtn. Thier Hoptimus Prime IPA has a kick. But I have to say that La Cumbre should of been on there also if only for the Elevated. Another good IPA is Tractor beer from Los Lunas.

Looks like they may never open based on that donation page. They need to hit $40k for their "investor" to kick in and are barely over $10k? Sounds weird.

At least they are 25% of the way.

I had their beers at the ABQ Hopfest back in Oct, and they are pretty darn good. They will be a welcome addition to the Burque (when/if they ever open).

Another brewery that was supposed to open this comming fall is Goathead Brewery, but there hasn't been any updates on their website for months. The owner/brewer makes some great stuff (Hop Sodomy IPA, and Maple Shade Stout).

Tractor have gotten much better over the last 18 months. Heck, they are even mentioned in this news piece in the ALES section:

Come on, get hoppy - Army News | News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Army Times

    Sod Buster Pale Ale
    Tractor Brewing Co
    Los Lunas, NM

You can visit their taproom in Nob Hill, or the brewery down in LL for the goods.

Here's a google map I made showing the locations of breweries in the ABQ area. I need to add a 'coming soon' for the Broken Bottle Brewery. Their location will be 9421 Coors Blvd. NW

Stopped in at Tractor's Tap Room in Nob Hill, they had a really good milk stout - Milk Mustachio Stout (6% abv).

A World Beer Cup medal is one of the most prestigious forms of recognition brewers can receive, and this year two ABQ breweries brought medals back to the 'Burquè:

    La Cumbre:
Silver - Malpais Stout (2011 Silver GAFB winner)
    Silver - Barley's Wine
Bronze - Elevated IPA (2011 Gold GABF winner)

    Nexus:
    Silver - Imperial Cream Ale

Drop by, enjoy a pint and congratulate the brewers!

Jeff (La Cumbre) posted an interesting write up about winning three medals at this year's World Beer Cup:

    La Cumbre Brewing Co.

I can say without any hesitation, Albuquerque brewers can give any city in the country a run for it's money. What we lack in quantity, we have in both variety and quality. Hops? I tasted nothing that was any better than any of the IPAs and DIPAs that this town is kicking out... (lots more)

I brought my own can and they were more than happy to fill it. I never make them so it's sort of nice to have something different.

Cool write up about biking and breweries in ABQ (not an all-inclusive list but a good start):

Biking Albuquerque’s breweries » Travel | DRAFT Magazine

The best way to cool the burn from all that red and green chile? A pint of craft beer like only Albuquerque can brew. And when you’re done biking the city’s best breweries, you’ll be ready for another plate.

    Santa Fe beer report...

My wife and I rented a casita near the Plaza, and spent 3 days eating, shopping, hot springing, hiking, and for me, drinking beer. I hit ALL 4 (are there more?) breweries in Santa Fe. Here are my vague impressions...
    - 2nd Street - Great location at the Railyard! I ordered a sampler, highlights were the Cream Stout and the Double IPA. I wasn't a big fan of the standard IPA, for me it was very bitter but without the balancing sweetness. I guess that is OK for something different than when I am used to, but not my preference.
We only had appetizers, the big pretzels with ghee (aww yeah) and calamari, both were good. We were stuffed from lunch at the Plaza Cafe and Kakawa chocolate.
    - Santa Fe Brewing - Lucky for me the quilt store was down this way, so my wife had an extra reason to drive South, as this is a bit out of town. I love their Java Stout. Chicken Killer was great, at 10% still smooth not overly sweet. I liked their Porter enough to buy a six pack of it. Cool tap room. Their taster tray was a bargain - 10 4 oz. pours for $8.50.
    - Marble Tap Room - Marble has a tasting room on the Plaza. Great location with a patio overlooking all the action, and propane heaters for the night. Ordered multiple tasters here too. I've had the Red here in CO, but enjoyed their IPA and Double White. And HBC Brown. They make great beer, for sure.
    - Blue Corn - Our last dinner in Santa Fe. My wife picked it, I felt guilty having us go to yet another brewery by this point. The food was good, real good, our waitress was spotty or just an off night. I liked the IPA, I don't recall anything really sticking out but the beers were solid. Once again I ordered a sampler here.

OK so I wasn't taking notes, and since my wife doesn't drink beer I had to drink all of it, so memory is a little spotty. But I definitely came away happy with the local beer scene and looking forward to my next opportunity.

    Oh bike-related...

We spent a half day at Ojo Caliente, 1 hour North of Santa Fe. My wife scheduled a massage in the morning and I rode most of the trails there. The property borders BLM land.

The trails are fun. Nothing mind-blowing, but still fun weaving back and forth through the desert. The main access is a road that brings you up to the mica mine, then you jump on multiple singletracks. It would be nice if they could route some trails up some of the hills, it stayed mostly level in the valley so no big ascents/descents, just a lot of XC loose trail.

The pools are real nice. I think there were six public pools in all. I wish I could relax and spend more time there. I recommend.

But I definitely came away happy with the local beer scene and looking forward to my next opportunity.
is a trip down to ABQ in the cards for you?

La Cumber, Tractor, Marble (the brewery), Chama... etc all beckon

Ahh, not anytime soon. ABQ is about 7 hours from home. This trip was our first escape from the kids, my in-laws watched them for 4 days while we played in Santa Fe.

I hope to get out that way again maybe within a couple years...

I will have to check out bosque this winter when I am down there again! Was friends with one of the founders in college.

So to post some ABQ Stoke. I was down there this weekend tasting the brews and ripping the trails. I must say that the trail work done in Tunnel/Otero over the past few years was well worth it! I didn't do the brand spankin new section, but I did ride Tunnel, to gnasty wag, over to blue ribbon, down otero, back up the connector and back on tunnel, and it was spectacular. I haven't ridden these trails in 4 years and they are still awesome, and frankly better than I remember!! I also got to shred the foothills, which was nice, first time I cleared the big rock and the rock wall back to back at the end of pearls dive, good to see my skills have improved since I left town. Albuquerque is great, and I hope to get more riding in the 505 done next year. Nate, next time I am down, we should try and meet up for a beer.

Really, what's left to say...Witches Tit, Acclimated IPA, Uzzi and Disc Golf...a few of my favorite things.

Oh and just because I feel like sharing, our offer was accepted for a condo in Angel Fire, so there will be a bit more DH in my future.

If anyone here cares, I did purchase a Magic Hat variety 12-pack at Jubilation last week, so I guess we'll be getting beer from there soon.

Now if we could just score some Hopslam from Bells Brewery in Michigan!

and if we're getting Dogfishhead, maybe we can get this too. 9%
I wonder what the secret ingredient is??

Santa Fe's newest brewery, Duel, just got federal approval. Cheers!

    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Duel-...75606675882374

Working on recipes this week. We already have some huge beers designed and the recipes for those are dialed in, now we're trying to dial things back some for a few lower ABV beers (which is hard for us).

First up is a Belgian Style Pale Ale, should clock in at a nice n' easy 4.5-5%. After that a Witbier in the 4.5-5.5% range, and finally A Belgian Style IPA in the 6-7% range.

For those keeping track, recipes dialed in so far are:
    Imperial Quadrupel, 17%ABV
    Belgian Style Stout, 13%ABV
    Belgian Style Golden Ale, 11%ABV
Belgian Style Dark Strong Ale, 9.5%ABV

    Anyone else thirsty?

Tix $15 - New Mexico Brewers Guild

    Santa Fe's Winterbrew beer lineup...

Santa Fe, Second St, Marble, Rio Grande, Sierra Blanca, High Desert, La Cumbre, Tractor, Turtle Mountain, Blue Corn, Nexus, Chama River, Santa Fe Spirits (distillery) and a few surprises...

If all goes well, we'll have both Duel Brewing and Bosque Brewing in the lineup, two of NM's newest breweries.

It's very mild Tue evening here in southern Germany, so I thought I'd open the windows of our haus to the cool breeze, listen to the church organ player practice, and enjoy a Crew IPA brewed in Munich. Fun factoid: the cathedral in front out our hauns is from the mid-1100's.

    Prost!

I'm actually a firm believer that alcohol should be illegalized. NM for sure. There's to many completely ignorant people here that are to stupid to drink responsibly.

At the very least, people should have to take some kind of IQ test to get a license to be able to buy alcohol.
