    Bergen County Parks

Bergen County has launched a newsletter website that allows comments. Currently mountain biking is not legal in any Bergen county park. If you would like to see this change, please leave comments and attend the open house meeting on Thursday October 17, 2013. Details below:

    ************************************************** ********

The Bergen County Departments of Parks and Planning are pleased to present the draft management alternatives newsletter for the county parkland located in the Ramapo Mountains. Public participation is being sought.

A few years ago the County launched the park planning study to examine the future of County parkland in the Ramapo Mountains. Today this newsletter presents three park planning concepts based upon public input, prior park planning analysis and the County Park staff’s professional experience. These concepts define some ideas for the preservation of the Park’s natural and historic features. They offer different kinds of recreational and educational experiences, and explore ways to collaborate with others. The final management plan, to be drafted and presented at a later date, will help park managers focus on what is most important about the park.

To view and provide comments on the newsletter, you can visit the project website at: Bergen County, NJ - Official Website - Ramapo Mountain County Park Management Plan and select the “DRAFT Alternatives Newsletter” link to view the newsletter and select “Submit your comments on Draft Alternatives Newsletter” link to provide your comments.

Additionally you can also attend an open house on Thursday, October 17, 2013, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Township of Mahwah Administration Building, Senior Activity Center, 475 Corporate Drive, Mahwah, New Jersey. (The entrance to, and parking for the Senior Activity Center is located at the rear of the building.) If you attended the prior Visioning Session, this open house is structured to allow people to drop in and learn more about the planning process, ask questions about the direction of the plan and provide comments.

The County has set the newsletter comment period through November 4, 2013.

There were several groups at different tables the last time. No way to get a good head count.

    Bump:

Attention Bergen County residents and visitors: Bergen County is in stage 2 of it's parks planning policy. They will be making long term planning decisions, so your input is urgent and important. Jorba has been doing great things around the state, and a policy that would allow Jorba to make improvements in Bergen County could be huge in terms of bike access and sustainable trail improvements.

There will be a County meeting workshop Thursday Oct 17 in Mahwah, plus there is a website where you can review 3 different alternatives and leave comments in the submit comment link. Pay close attention to alternative "C" which is the only alternative that could allow for bike access. Please be good enough to look this over and leave your comments, and attend the meeting if you can. Please share this with your bike community friends.

If you have not already done so, please leave your comments in the comments section of the above link by Nov 4.

Judging by my take on conversation at the open house, the County may continue to ban Bikes unless they receive an overwhelming amount of comments from mountain bikers and other users wishing to share and help maintain the park. Jorba has suggested that access with trail maintenance by Jorba be considered in the western half of the property. This would include Cannoball, Yellow and trails that intersect Ringwood State Park. If you want access, please speak up!
