    Reno Area Trails....

It looks like my wife and I have made the plunge and purchased (unless it falls through on inspection) a house in the Reno hills. We have been in the SF Bay Area for a while now.

We did this for a combination of reasons--'life is short', we have some friends in the Reno area, proximity to Tahoe, and possible tax benefits. We are a bit nervous, but also pretty excited about spending time up in the area. The area is much maligned but there is a ton going on in Reno these days economically. The real estate market, while not as crazy as in the bay area, is very, very strong right now although still reasonably far off the highs.

Anyway, I am reasonably familiar with rides near Tahoe but not much else in the area. The house we are trying to buy sits right on top of one of the big 'ditch' trails (Steamboat) in the southern foothills, but I know there are tons of places to ride out there. I would love to hear about the options on the Nevada side of things.

This might actually force me to get in better shape!!

Welcome to Reno, the Whites creek/ Thomas creek loop is open and mostly singletrack..woods, creeks, not bad but can be crowded.

Trails at Peavine are open and more to ride soon in Tahoe.

Great Basin Bicycles in South Reno has lots of good info on their website, Rich the owner is good guy

PM me your email address and I will send you more info....Gary

Thanks gang, Garry I am sending you a pm. We are excited but scared as well. Really looking forward to the summer! I am especially looking forward to being able to hike or bike (Steamboat ditch) right from our front door!

Yeah there is a quite a few trails in Reno and if you are in the south part of town then you are only a short drive up Mt Rose and then you can hit a lot. Check the Flume Trail Bike shop as they usually have good updates on how the Tahoe trails are doing and when they should be open.

You can always come down to Carson and try some of our trails or even further south to Gardnerville and Genoa. Check out bikecarson.com, carson valley trails association and you will get great info. I mainly ride Ash Canyon in Carson city because it is 2 miles from my house, great network of trails there albeit short. We are working on a new section that will be finished sometime next year that will branch Ash Canyon Creek Trail and connect to Kings Canyon, which is another 5 miles or so of trail.

    Welcome to Reno-Tahoe Cohen!

I have posted this before in a previous thread, but I figured I would repost this for your info. Although I spend most of my time on road, I try to get in two mtb rides/week and would be more than happy to meet up. Click here for a summary of the riding in this area from my perspective. Cheers.

Fingers crossed, and its not about how fast you go on the trail, its about how much you get out of it!

Inspections went great, we liked the house more today than when we first saw it which is good....so Reno here we come! We close in late May, and I will hopefully find some of you willing to show me around a bit.

Cool beans, man. Right on the Steamboat ditch? That`ll be nice for evening summer strolls. Do you road ride too? I no longer have anything that resembles what most people think of as a mountain bike, but can turn you on to plenty of paved and unpaved roads if you`re into that.

Yes right above the ditch. We are avid hikers/walkers as well so really looking forward to being able to get right on the trail from our house. I am also a road rider, although not as much as mountain as I don't like the bike/car interactions much.

    Glad everything went well...

Seems like we have quite a few new riders to the area, maybe it is time for a Reno group meet-up? Can do mtn one day and road a next for those that are interested.

Magnum - you doing the Sierra Cup again this year? Just signed up for the carnage that was the PineNut yesterday so looks like I am committed. Even thinking of trying my hand at the SageBrush CX Series with my Jake!

We closed on the house today! Heading up tomorrow morning for a few days..not bringing the bike this trip as there is too much setup to do, and we want to relax a bit. We will probably do some hiking and explore downtown a bit. Any suggestions on fun things to do downtown over the holiday weekend are appreciated.

But next time I come up in June I will be bringing my bike! My wife thinks I should get another bike to keep up in Reno...what a great wife!

Whoohoo! Well, I hope you and your wife both enjoy life here. Another bike to keep in Reno? Does that mean you`re going to half move and still maintain a place elsewhere? My favorite thing to do on holiday weekends is avoid downtown . If you`re less of a hermit than I am, there`s probably something going on down there. Google ought to fill you in on details. As an ongoing thing (until July) that I want to take my folks to when they get back into town, my boss said the show "Menopause, the Musical" was really funny. They have dinner + show packages starting at $35. Not sure if that`s what you were asking about.

First Reno rides this weekend! Only going up for a couple of days, heading to TRT for a couple of hrs with a buddy, then tomorrow morning up in Truckee with another buddy. Short trip so no time to organize something with you folks, but I will be back soon and would love to be shown around on the Reno side.

I love my wife!!! She insisted that I get a Reno only bike so we don't have to schlep bikes back and forth all the time...so this morning I just got an Ibis Mojo SL. I am taking my stumpy up today since I haven't had time to dial in the mojo yet, but I am a lucky man indeed!

Any suggestions on tires for Reno/Tahoe for the mojo would be appreciated. It currently has schwalbe 2.0 tires and I'd like something a little more 'beefy'...and I will be running tubes.

Thanks again, hope to ride with some of you soon...

I am coming up to Reno late this week, and will be there Thursday through Saturday. Anyone interested in showing me some trails? I have a few errands to do at the house but am hoping to be able to get out onto the dirt at least twice over the three days. Looking for 2-3 hr rides at a slow pace as I"m not yet in good shape. If anyone is available and interested lmk here and/or via pm. Thanks!

I've been living in Reno my whole life, but am just now getting into MTB. I'm not in good shape either and need people to ride with as I'm new to the sport. I can show you some trails up in the Caughlin Ranch area and by UNR if you're down. I'd also be down to explore some of the other trails around town. A little demographics: I'm 24, just graduated from UNR with BS Physics, ride a 29er hardtail. Grew up on two wheels and have been riding sportbikes for 6 years, so I'm relatively capable on two wheels for a "beginner". Alternatively, if you've found any good and consistent riding groups that meet up, let me know--I'd love to check something like that out.

Sorry for the delayed response, pm probably works better. Our house is near Caughlin ranch but I haven't ridden there yet. I've done a few rides in the southwest, starting in Galena forest trailhead and riding Jones/White creek trails. Also a couple of out and backs on the TRT. I will let you know next time I am in Reno and we can try to ride together. Thanks.

No worries about the delay. I have yet to make it to the South end of town, but hopefully I'll make it over there this week. A ride would be fun though, I need to look into groups around town...
