When will there be a high end 29er?

The wheels are bricks on the 29ers and for a grand the components are so so.

Anyone know when motobecane plans on coming out with something nice?

the wheels on the cliff team are WTB laserdisc trail 29. 2000g for the set. The mavic crossmax 29 (considered really light) are 1740g.

the cliff team also is full SRAM x9 and avid 7 brakes. Not top of the line but right up there. The mavic crossmax 29 (considered really light) are 1740g

Actually WTB lists their LaserDisc wheelset at 2040g but that is with their really light hubs and 28 double butted spokes. The Team's wheelbuild with heavier generic hubs and 32 non-butted spokes is probably at least 2200g. That is over a pound difference in wheelset weight.

Most of the rest of the parts are quite good (esp. for the price). Like serfur1 said, the X.9 and Juicy 7s are close to top of the line. Some of the other parts are still pretty generic and/or entry-level (cranks, saddle, seatpost, stem, bar) but people tend to replace some of those anyway based on personal preference

So-so components for close to a grand (?) Compare the component spec to any other companies bikes in that price range and then you will see truly "so-so" components. Spend $550 on an American Classics wheelset (1650g or so), get an XT or XTR cassette and some light weight tires and you are golden. ALL for about $1800.

I personally don't consider $1000 and $1800 in the same price range...

I just noticed that bikeisland has Vuelta team wheels in 29" now. Pretty light at 1801g, and a great price at $300 shipped. And if they are as strong as the 26" version it is a great wheelset.
A pretty good upgrade for 29ers.

I been emailing with BD the last few days. I was told more Cliff 29er Teams would be available in the summer. It was also mentioned that Motobecane will have a Team version 29er out in the spring which will be equipped with XTR, a Reba Team Fork and a Titanium frame, no exact pricing but somewhere in the $2k range.

dammit Jim, I didn't need that sort of good news right when I was about to lay some coin down for the Fantom Team!

Common Mike some time frames?? I won't be able to both this year or maybe even the next two.

From what I understand talking with Mike, he is expecting the next batch of Cliff 29 Teams to be on pre-order in mid-March when they are shipped from the manufacturer and they should arrive in the States and ship out to customers about a month later.

Good sooner than I expected. I got an income tax refund asking to be spent on a bike

Very nice! If I was going to buy a 29er, this would be the one.
Rather I am going to build up a SS from scratch, though it is tempting to buy this and sell off the XTR drivetrain parts and cassette for a pretty penny and make it into a rockin' single speed.

    Fly 29er geometry

Does anyone know if the new Fly 29er geometry correlates to any other bikes? I have heard BikesDirect bikes tend to match up with Fuji. I looked at the Fuji web site and the Fly does not match the 29er Tahoe. My concern is with this being a new bike with minimal reviews, I am not sure I want to hold out until July.

Otherwise, this looks like a sweet ride and exactly what I am looking for!

    why don't you stock more?

    MIKE-

Why don't you stock more high end 29ers?
Seems like you run out of them pretty quickly with a long time between re-stocking...

When are you going to put the Cliff Team up for prepay?

When are you going to get an FS 29er?

PS - the name Cliff is kind of funny - reminds me of a big red dog
