My '04 Fantom XC powder coated last year. Quite heavy at 32.5 lbs..... I use it as a training bike so when I race with my Scalpel, it feels feathery light. All components upgraded except the frame and rear shocks. I like the aggressive geometry and tight cockpit of this moto.

    The fantom comp

This is (was) my fantom. I recently robbed some of the parts off it to build up a Haro sonix VL120. I'm looking forward to getting this mangle back operational though. I think the moto's are one of the most underated bikes out there. Not race bikes (as you can see I tried it anyway), but certainly all mountain work horses.

Oh, someone emailed me a question. They would like to buy a FS fantom comp frame on ebay and would like to know if the tires that he already had would work with this frame. 26in wtb wheels and 2.7 tires.

Will a 2.7 tire work with that frame?

wow 2.7 is mega wide....i honestly dont know why you'd want anything that wide, but right now i run 2.1's on my fantom comp ds, and i'd say there's 3/8" of clearance at least on each side of the tire, so if they do in fact ACTUALLY measure 2.7" wide, then yes they SHOULD work...that is if in fact my 2.1" tires are actually 2.1".....

This is not for me. I got a email and someone was asking me about this. here is the email received.

    "Hello Guys,

Looking for some help, I’m looking to buy the 2007 FANTOM COMP DS from this Link in Ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-07-Motobecan...QQcmdZViewItem

The problem is I have a pair of WTB tires size 26*2.7” will they fit on a 16” frame????

    Please Help,

    Thank you, "

If that size tire wont fit. Then how about the maximum tire size he can run. I would like to give him some kinda answer.

    Fred.

well like i said, in THEORY it will fit...b/c the opening is large enough....but i would not suggest running that size tire b/c you do want more space than what he'll end up with between the tire and the chainstay...for mud clearance, etc....if his wheel gets the least bit out of true, he wont even be able to LIMP off the trail, b/c there's no tolorence there....see with a 2.1 tire you could atleast ride to the car if it's not INSANELY bent...just some stuff for you to pass along to him....tell him good luck, but dont use that tire....

Not sure about a 2.7 and IMHO, I would not go wider than a 2.3 for several reasons as snobrder5 mentioned..... it is just not practical at all. Even if it fits, you will have no clearance whatsoever to allow for mud, etc.

Thanks all! I sent the information along. I told him that the standard tire for that frame was a 2.1 so a 2.3 would be the maximum I would go. Told him new tires are cheep and that was a good deal on that frame and said good luck on his buying decision.

I’m sorry, I personally don’t have any photos of the 16” frame. However, my fantom has the 18” frame. I realize it’s not exactly what you wanted but it does give you some idea.

    Photo’s above… It is a awesome bike.

2.2 in Kenda's bearly fit on my bike, the front FD kind rubs when in the granny gear.

Just bought this bike a few weeks ago and am using it for my cardio/street ride for now. Bought it from local bikesdirect store. Very pleased with the bike, store service and the speed of a hardtail again.

So far I have swapped tires out to Kenda 80psi Klimax Lites. Swapped seatpost out for Thomson (just inserted post in frame no ride yet. will need to adjust), saddle for WTB RocketV, pedals to ATAC XS and chain to PC991 .

Will swap grips to OURY lock-on's soon. May even add some barends. Nice bike this.

Just my 2 cents..... instead of going for oury lock-on and a separate bar end, try Ergon grips with bar ends. It prevents the numbing of your hands from extended rides. Works especially if you're old like me that has arthritis or people with CTS. It costs a little bit more but worth every penny. It's basically designed for racing and works well.

    .. spooky.
Exactly what I needed to know without having to ask. Been suffering from CTS for years -it's why I was out of cycling for so long and can only ride the Yamaha for short distances. Great call there nico2me, I'll make that swap instead.

I know the feeling and share your sentiments..... until a racer with CTS mentioned it to me during a race. Now, if only they will make one for a motorcycle, I would be ecstatic !!!!!

    2008 Motobecane 700 HT

What, am I the only one with an HT model?

    Here's my 2008 700 HT.

    2008 Motobecane 700 HT hardtail
    Shimano Deore XT
Rock Shox Dart 2 fork w/ 100 mm travel
    TEKTRO AQUILA Mechanical Disc Brakes
    Novara Expanding Wedge Seat Bag
Topeak Peak Master Blaster DX Pump
    Blackburn Mountain Cage
    Schwinn Expandable Cage

Blackburn Mountain Cage with water bottle for me and Schwinn Expandable Cage to carry my son's water water bottle on bike path rides.

Unlike most bashguards that replace the big ring, this one allows you to protect your big ring too.

A strip of old inner tube, a little over an inch wide and two feet long, wrapped around the chainstay makes a great protector and costs nothing. Tucking the final end is difficult, but leaves a reasonably nice look compared to the zip ties that some people use.

    700 Ds

Here's my motobecane 700 DS that I built up two years ago. Romic rear, marzocchi 130mm Drop-off fork, fsa stem, race face xc cranks, changed from 8 speed to 9 speed. Started as a beginner bike and turned it into a fully functional All Mountain bike.

cyberguy, that's actually a pretty sweet ride! i've never been a big DS series fan, but yours is really nice...what weight spring are you running? i've been toying with the idea of switching my air shock to a coil, but i think at 5" of travel, with the 3.3:1 leverage ratio, i'd need a 1100lb spring for my weight.....which is pretty unheard of for a 6.5" shock....how much rear travel are you getting out of that DS frame? and does it track fairly well on the rocky and technical downhills? nice bike man!

    Hey snobrder5,
I'm running an 800 lb coil on a romic-d 165mm. I'm 230 lbs and the shock is everything I need it to be. I thought about changing to a 5 inch shock in the rear but I asked the local bike shop and he didn't recommend it because he said it would throw the geometry of the bike all off. The bike tracks well and but with the new rear shock it eats up rock gardens like a mad-dog! I can keep up with my buddies 5" specialized enduro all day in the rough stuff. The only thing that is still original on the bike now is the wheelset. Which, in my opinion are some of the toughest rims around (Alex racers edge 32H). The only downer is the weight. Good luck finding that massive coil! Thanks for the compliments.

Help me out here guys. I've got some great pictures of a self built Motobecane Phantom29 equip with some nice higher ends components (Reba, Blunt Rims, Stylo Crank, BB7"s) but I am having trouble figuring out how to post them to this forum. Suggestions/directions would be very helpful...thanks!
