Noticed grease on Moto where stem/fork come together - help.

I noticed an oily film on the frame where the stem and fork join together on my Moto 600HT. Took a picture of it. I don't ride this bike hard at all -- asphalt, well worn and used two track trails, gas well roads, etc. Garage kept, less than 80 miles on it.

Is this something I need to fix?

    Thanks for the help.

    John

I wouldn't think it is a problem. Just a bit of grease coming out of the headset bearings/cups. Not sure how it would get up in middle of the head tube welds though. Could wipe it off and see if it returns.

Though, it isn't too hard to just take the headset all apart and check it is greased properly.

The grease is coming out from all around the bottom of the head set where it meets the fork. No cracks in the welds on the tubing. I think its just excess grease migrating.

I've never taken a head set apart, any special tools to do so?

No special tools should be needed, just an allen wrench or two.

I'd watch a couple utube vidoes like this to get an idea:

Thank you - that was kind of you to post that video link. Looks simple and watching the head set come apart I can better understand why I am seeing the grease marks.

    Much appreciated.
