    Straight 8 Rear Axle Question

If one had access to a machinist and machine shop, is there any reason why I couldn't make a custom rear axle with 15mm ends to fit into the dropouts and with a boss for the floating brake, and then neck it down to 12mm to fit modern 12 x 150 hubs? I believe the original is a 15 x 150, correct? The driver here is that I may want to replace a rear wheel with something modern but without lacing up my own on an Edco, etc. Does the inboard floating brake screw this plan up? Thanks for any guidance here.

Duh, after thinking about it, the obvious hit me - the axle has to pass through the hub. So now I'm thinking something like an axle that is 15mm on the floating brake side, then 12mm the rest of the way. Then machine up a "pinch spacer" for the driveside dropout that is 3mm thick.

That's what I would do. It should be pretty easy to bust out a new axle like that.

In my opinion, the Edco hubs are pieces of crap, and finding a way to replace it is a good idea. It also gets a proprietary part off your bike.

Assuming this project ever gets off the ground (see other thread), my only concern is if any hubs other than Edcos or Hadleys have clearance to the floating brake arm on the non-drive side. In my head, I see Mavic Deemaxes on this thing, but I'm not sure I can pull that off without a re-lace.
