    Sorry for the noob question...but the "eye-to-eye" measurement is from the two top "eyes", right?

    they need to be serviced as well. They were stored under pressure for the last ten years or so.

    So what are the implications of storage under pressure? I've never bled down my bike over the winter, etc.

    It can force air past the o-ring and into the oil reservoir, which then will effect your damping and can lead to the negative coil spring breaking. If the negative spring breaks, you stand of very good chance of ruining the shock in short order.

    Ah, so a fluid change is in order to avoid cavitation, it sounds like. Now to figure out if an Alps can be serviced on my own, and what shock fluid to put back into it...

    Yes, you can service it on your own, and is quite easy to do. Most of the seals are replaceable, but I don't know of a replacement for the wiper or the shaft bushing. For the Sweetspot I found that a 30-35 cS/40 oil worked well on rebound setting 3. If you want, I could write up a quick set of instructions on how I service mine.
