    Trail Master Certification Class

Looking to build a new trail? Reroute an existing trail? Improve relations with a Land manager, (City, County, State, or Federal).

Trail Master Certification Class Sponsored by WI DNR and the Langlade Area Mountain Bike Association (aka LAMBA). July 27-30th. Langlade Wisconsin. July 27-30.

Trail Design Specialists’ Trail Master Certification Class will cover the latest advances in trail design, construction and maintenance with a focus on long term sustainability and ease of maintenance.

Participants will be provided with a detailed booklet specific to each segment of the course. Topics will include how to properly design and lay out a trail, how to avoid erosion and other environmental issues, how to handle user conflicts, proper construction techniques, how to rehabilitate existing trails, and a host of other topics.

The 4 day course will include both classroom learning and hands-on practical trail experience. There is no charge for the class instruction. $20 will be collected per person to obtain lunch for four days.

Note: I am told this is a very intensive class and the four days allow instruction well beyond the great two day IMBA classes.

after you graduate, do we have to call you, Master Johnson? If so, I think Tim Bates should take the course, then we could call him, Master.....

It's cool that you set this up Charlie! You're like cool and stuff

I've done similar courses, and if you're at ALL interested in trail design/maintenance, its a must do. Pretty intensive four days, but well worth the time.
    Just a regular guy.

Also dissapointed that this was scheduled on the same weekend of one of the bigger events in the midwest. I would have been "IN" otherwise as well.

Yeah this seems like something worth attending. I don't understand why they would schedule it at the same time as one of the biggest races of the season. Sorry, my Wausau 24 was paid for in December. Not missing

Y'all could form a Whine club.

Holy smokes ladies, if you can't make it, maybe your husbands can attend.

Schedules revolve around the DNR's schedule, the instructor's schedule, other local events...etc. I guarantee there is not a weekend all Summer that won't have a conflict with other events.

If you dont take time away from riding to learn how to make great trails and to then take time to make great trails there will be no trails to ride. Cant ride if there are no trails.

Wow... another benifit of offering a 4 day class is that it captures those who are truely committed to keeping the trails killer for all to enjoy... Remember this is not your run of the mill IMBA Trail Care Crew visit. It requires dedication (4 days worth, just imagine if racing only took 4 days of dedication) with testing each day and is well worth it! HPT has been hosting this same course for the past few years, and will be hosting it again in a couple weeks.

Maybe instead of complaining that it doesn't fit "Your" training and "Racing" schedule, be happy that others are there to learn and keep your trails in primo condition.

    Dudes,

I know two out of the three people that complained about the schedule conflict with Wausau 24 and they both are very involved with trail building. DeKerf is one of the trail stewards at the Northern Kettles and Serotonin is involved in the formation of the new Southern Kettle IMBA Chapter. So you're all on the same side.

We should all just be thanking Charlie for setting this up!

I think Charlie has a work day coming up on May 5th - 9 AM at Bearpaw - bring a shovel

Well said Gomez and Thank You Charlie for organizing this event. I think my dedication to trail advocacy and my sick twisted desire to ride my bike solo for 24 hours is what frustrates "me" that I can't make this event. I'm not frustrated with you, Charlie, for scheduling it for that weekend. I'm thankfull that it's being offered to those that can make it.

I also know of another individual that plays a "huge" role in maintaining and building one of the great trail systems of Northern WI that is unable to attend as he'll be attending W24 as well. I'm not going to call him out as he chooses not to participate on this board but I'm betting many of you have enjoyed and cursed, in a good way, the work he's done on that system. So don't be so quick to judge some of us racers as many of us put just as much soul into our trails as we do our training. Now set fourth to learn the masterful skills of trail building. Your efforts and dedication are much appreciated. Hope to join you next time.

Well said. I'm not sure if my comment earlier came across as "whining" like some have stated. I was trying to say that I wish that I could attend the course. It's definitely a skill worth having for being a mt biker and appreciating the trails and keeping them alive. I know that Dekerf is a huge trail building advocate and does more work on trails than just about anyone I know. But I also know how he rides and it sucks that he'll have to miss this course. I'd love to learn some things too, but I will also be spending all day and all night riding....then all day again. Hope the OP wasn't offended that we all wished we could make it but couldn't. It's great that they are doing it though and I hope a lot of people attend.

I am sorry if I offended anyone with my comment I made last night. I Know DeKerf is a excellent trail builder and has brought the northern kettles to where it is today. I have done a bunch of work with him and I know his passion for building and riding excellent trails. But with working with him I have herd of peoples complaints like why do you build trails on (insert time and day here) that's when there is a group ride that happens every week i could not possibly miss a group ride to build trails. But the same people don't have a problem to go out the next day and ride the nice trails that others have built.

So if you take time away from riding to help build and maintain trails that's excellent. And I know you cant make it to every trail day its just not possible. If I have offended a trail builder I am sorry

My comment was to the people that can always find a excuse to not build trails. Shame on you!!
    Trails don't build them selves!

I am trying to work out plans to be there for the full four days Charlie. Will sign up as soon as I get it cleared...then I hope I can bring this experience to reddest of the necks here in good ol' motorized Taylor County.

This was a great class! There is was more that goes into building sustainable trails than I ever thought. Mike Riter is a excellent teacher and a professional trial builder and he really knows his stuff!! I am glad I took the class if anyone wants to learn about trail building that is the class to take.

Thanks cjohnson for setting this up and Mike Riter for coming up to do the class.

    JOHN
