I just moved to St. Paul for law school and I'm living on Victoria Street by Shepherd Road. Are there any good beginner trails close to me? I'm looking to buy my first bike shortly and would like to get on the trails soon. Also, are there any good parks with bigger trails that I could take my dog with me to?
Also, if anyone happens to be selling a lower model bike, let me know!
Salem Hills is designed to be a beginner trail but I don't recommend it. It's just a dirt trail, no rock piles, jumps, or any technical features at all, and most of it is deeply rutted. Battle Creek is mostly a ski trail but there are some short singletrack sections. It is poorly signed. Theodore Wirth is good. Lebanon Hills is the best trail in town and has long sections of beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert trails, and it is well signed. Most anyone should be able to handle the intermediate trail. The prior poster linked to MORC which is the local group that maintains these trails and you can find directions to and maps for all these trails.
Around here the trails are for exclusive purposes. You don't see hikers and people walking dogs on mtb trails, and I wouldn't recommend it as the bikers will not at all be expecting anyone on foot. I saw a couple walking a dog at Theo Wirth a few weeks ago, on a very fast loop, and had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting them, as well as a few others I would assume. I especially wouldn't recommend walking a dog on a local trail as it could end tragically for the dog. A lot of people do walk their dogs on the cross country ski trails that weave around a lot of these mtb trails however.
You'd be fine walking your dog on a ski trail. There are ski trails at battle creek and lebanon - those two being the closest to you, as well as elm creek, maybe some others too.
so if you want to ride with a dog go over the 35e Bridge to the south and take the Hwy 13 Exit. might have to go to 110 and loop around since 13 is under construction. Either way you want to get to the Sibly house museum. Look for Lucky 13's bar and then go across the street. there is a big culvert tunnel thing and on the other side is a trail that goes about 8 miles along the river. it is just open trees and such but lots of people have their dogs down there.
