I was out there Saturday 3/14/09 doing work on the trails, with the trail crew.

The ground was frozen solid until 11am or so. Once midday broke, it was a muddy mess in most places I encountered. The hill climb on orange, which meets up with red, was solid ice across the trail in many places, pretty sure that's a north slope tho. This weeks weather should certainly put a serious dent in the thaw and drying we all no-doubt wish for.

Last I checked on the hotline, the trails will be inspected on Apr 1st and we will know more after the inspection.

PS: Remember that sand pit on the green/blue that's kind of close to the connector? That's all gone now. The loggers had their way with that area. There's a giant open area around there now. A real bummer, I always felt good hammering through that section.

I understand the principle behind a "multiple use" forest but-- man-- why do they have do hit one of the best trail systems around? I dont think that the people who decide this kind of thing realize the amount of money that there is to be made off of the people involved in this sport. Muir/Carlin could and should be the number one trail system in the state. Instead lets let the loggers have their way. Just stupid-- People never stop suprising me. Short sighted and foolish.

I heard the story is the pines in that area were all diseased and they had to take them out in lieu of another strain of pine. Whatever the reasons though, it is a bummer that part of the trail is gone.

The super good news is that carlin is going to be getting a quite a lot of new trail added (this year I believe). I'm not sure if any of the muir/carlin trail crew regulars read this forum and can add more...but the additions should be pretty good and are certainly needed and welcomed IMO

    Kettle Openning Day '09

Dry as a desert out there this afternoon.......we cleared about a dozen spots where loggers had left debris, blocking the connector between Bluff and Young Roads and there are still some huge trees down across the northbound connector in that section cut by the loggers.

So dry its Crunchy out there,

    g

    Good Friday @ Kettle

Did a blue loop with Bethany today and the muir trails are Ultra-Smurfy. It's like they were freeze dried from last august and compacted. There are two big trees down on the blue loop. The first one is around a curve on the first downhill after the Rhythm Section and the second one is just before the biggest climb on the squirrel loop. These are the best Spring trail conditions we've seen in years!
