Metro South at ILRA Deno Day Sat., 5/8 9 am to 5 pm

    Hello, Metro South Mountain Bikers,

RE: Island Lake Demo Day Sat., 5/8 9am-5pm

From MMBA.ORG: "Spring is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing. It is time to get ready for the Island Lake Spring Bike Demo. Confirmed demo rigs by all of the usual suspects like Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Giant and new for this year Felt. Also all of Michigan's best bike retailers will be in attendance, plus a couple new entries from other outdoor sports. So you can find the bike and gear you want and find the best shop for you to buy it from. Test night lights as well.

Registration is open now, so make sure to sign up to avoid the lines and eliminate any delay to demoing the bikes. See mmba.org for more details at

    viewtopic.php?f=1&t=95333.

Several MMBA Chapters will be serving food for a donation to the statewide MMBA. Metro South will have sausages and veggie dogs. Others will have burgers and baked goods. This is a great way to met and greet our volunteers from all over the state. So, stop by and say hello! Membership renewals and merchandise will be available as well.

NOTE: The Demo Day itself is NOT an official MMBA Metro South event.

Thanks everyone for coming out for the meeting- no rain!!! Some rode before and after the meeting; Some lopped before the meeting. No one was all muddy, and the trail was in OK shape. The pre-meeting lopping helped. Minutes and pictures soon...

Come eat grilled burgers/sausages and Ride the Rouge!!! Meet at Joy and Spinoza(at the shelter with picnic tables). Bring your bike to get a tour of the trail!

FYI for those who want to learn more about the group that is helping with the Rouge Park new trail that we flagged this spring, the SCA. They have made great strides. We'll be having a BBQ and tour of the trail on their last day to celebrate their hard work, August 12th from 11 am to 2 pm.

    http://diggingdetroit.wordpress.com/

Last year we started a partnership with the SCA - Student Conservation Association, which is hosted by The Greening of Detroit. The SCA trains student conservation leaders, and the leaders train student crews who do summer work. Last the SCA did some amazing work on the trail, making major improvements, resolving some drainage problems, and cutting a few needed re-routes. This year they are cutting brand new trail based on some flagging the MMBA did in the spring on the east side of the river so that when done, we will finally have about a 3-mile loop between Joy and Tireman, with more to come. It's been a great partnership.

We may have bikes for the workers to ride as well.

    See you there!

    Just added:

Mark your calendars for the evening of Saturday, October 2nd. We will be at the Monroe trail in the later afternoon for a ride and some grilling, and then we'll stay to watch the cyclocross races held in the dark! Doesn't that sound fun? Let's show our support for the southernmost trail in our chapter and go ride it! More details soon, so watch for another posting on the board about specific times.

    October events and news

Please make a note of the upcoming October events within our chapter:

    1. Saturday, 10/2 4 pm until around 10 pm- Munson Park in Monroe.

    2. Sunday, 10/3 Rouge Park Trail Day, lunch and ride.

Weíll tweak a few sections that the SCA (Student Conservation Assocaiton) worked on this summer, then enjoy lunch and ride. The work is from 10-1 and the lunch and riding is from 1-2. Come to work, ride or both!!! Volunteers from the SCA will be joining us. This work day is also co sponsored by American Eagle. If you havenít seen the great work at Rouge this year so far, take a look at these pictures:

    and

    http://picasaweb.google.com/MMBA.Met...RougeTrailDay#

    and

    http://picasaweb.google.com/MMBA.MetroSouth/RougeDays#

    3. Saturday, 10/9/10- Island Lake Trail Day 9:30- 1:30.

...Grilling lunch and ride after. We got rained out of our spring trail day and the trail has been in great shape all year thanks to DNRE Dave and countless other volunteers who've given a little or a lot to a trail we all ride.
We have one big-ish project to handle on the 9th and we will be sending crews out to do some fall trimming in advance of next spring. If you have anything that you'd like to get done please post up ideas so we can prioritize.

    4. FYI- there was some recent discussion about some trails popping up in Wayne County at Holliday Park that were not MMBA trails. I know we have some good literature that promotes that we are an organization that is very conscious of sustainable trail building following IMBA guidelines, so I sent that off to the county parks just to let them know the MMBA was not involved. I CC'd John Gonway, the MMBA Advocacy Director.

Here are two pieces I included with the letter (and we even have cool MMBA letterhead):

    our chapter brochure:

    http://metrosouth.mmba.org/wp-conten...0110-Final.pdf

    http://metrosouth.mmba.org/wp-conten...MS_2010ppt.pdf

(it takes a while to upload, so you may want to do a right click and save as...)

I know Dave Thompson, chapter Board Rep, sent some e-mails as well.

    Happy Fall!

Minutes soon, but board votes are in:

    President- Joe Foy
    Vice President- Loren Konkus
At Large Board Member- Dave Thompson
    Treasurer- Scott Silvers
    Secretary- Dave Cox

Thanks to everyone for a great year. I worked with a terrific bunch of people on the Metro South Chapter Board, and we have a hard working set of Trail Coordinators that made things happen this year on our nine trails. Kudos to all the volunteers who helped with the trail days and events. Also, thanks to the Nate Phelps for advice and support on several issues. Returning to the general membership, I will continue to work on the Carlos Memorial at Highland as that was one goal I had set to complete in 2010 that we ran out of time to do. I also hope to continue to help with anything going on at the Rouge trail so that fire doesn't die out.

Congratulations to the 2011 Metro South Chapter Board! You guys are gonna rock!
