Has anyone ever seen a cougar in Michigan? I've started a website to track sightings. Anyone who is interested can check my site out and log their own sighting at michigancougars.info
There's one that hangs around behind my parent's house in Kalkaska. My mom and nephew have both seen it. My 2 younger brothers heard it while hiking back in there.
So long as your not the slowest in your riding group, you have nothing to worry about. If you are...I suggest your life insurance be up to date. Just sayin.
Sorry that the "boys" didn't follow your thread. We've not seen any Cougars here but they are indeed up here in the UP. One was caught on a trail cam near here just last fall. In fact,, I'm pretty sure they've pretty been at every location we've ever lived at, along with wolves. We of course don't waste much time worrying about that and get out for as much skiing and rides as we can.
Hope that helps.
Arly a tandem Nerd, Who rides them, loves them, so we sell them. superiortandems.com

That's right. I remember reading about that in the news. Arly, that's why I stay away from Copper Harbor despite your best efforts to get me up there.

On the stormy kromer facebook they just posted a image from someones trail cam around the Marquette area. Looked real..and big.. I am doing a ride from Houghton to Marquette through the Huron Mountains..sorta worried about it.
I guess people say you will never see them coming if they are going to attach. Typically they sneak upon you from behind.
My dad has a cottage on Misery Bay and after fishing we threw the remains behind his place and the next day we saw a black cougar. There have been multiple sighting of this one around the area...
Stopped by the "Old Indian Trail" near Arcadia/Crystal Lake. There's a sign there warning about cougars, what to do in an encounter - and - they are on the endangered species list.
I asked a local about this, she said the MDNR denies they exist in our state, but some park rangers in the area claim to have seen them and put those signs up as a precaution.
Funny - they don't exist but they are on the endangered species list.
There's a trail (running) race in Hoffmaster State Park (southern end of Muskegon county) called Run with a Cougar. Years ago several fairly reputable people independently spotted a cougar(s) in the vicinity of the park...and right around the same time I'd noticed odd cat-like noises in our yard at night. Could be roaming house cats, but maybe not. A bobcat was recently spotted in my neighborhood on the northern end of Muskegon county. I've read that wolf populations are also moving southward in MI. None of these sightings really surprise me. For years people have been photographing big cat prints in the sand.
My wife and I saw one last winter. Just west of the Williamston exit on I-96. We both saw it at the same time and spoke at the same time too! We have looked for it since. Most likely will never see it again. There is no doubt in our minds as to what we saw.
Saw one 30 years ago in the lupton swamp ( rose city area) coon hunting with a friend of mine.
I have never seen one since but I believe they are there, just sneaky as hell...
