    Copper Harbor FTF SS Suggestions

Never have done the Copper Harbor FTF race before; anyone have any experience racing it on a single speed and what gear inches have you run? I'll be on a 29er but if you let me know the gear & wheel size of what works, I'll figure it out for my bike.

It's a new course this year, looks like more climbing than years past. Whatever will get you up the climbs will spin you out going down (but you're used to that on a SS). I'd go for something like a 32/18/19/20 if you want to make 'more' of the climbs, and depending on how strong of a rider you are, go from there.

Nice thing is the race isn't until sunday, so you can show up and ride saturday, bring your tools and make changes saturday evening for the sunday race..

Thanks for the input. Both mentioned 32x18; on a a 29er, that seems like a very average gearing for most peeps. With that gear were you referring to a 29er?

The winner of the singlespeed category was on 32-18. We rode saturday and he tried the 19 tooth cog but he figured he was fine with the 18. I think he finished about 6th overall in the long race. It was a bastard of a course this year, seems to be the hardest yet. The climb at the beginning didn't break it up at all so entering the Flow it was wheel to wheel. A few racers (along with me) managed to get stung while descending the flow. I was cooked at the finish, it was a hard 29 miles.

I ran 32 19 will run 32 18 next year, the guy who won the SS will be on a geared bike next year because he wants a wheel. hahaha, he will actually probably get it to.

Those wheels are becoming more of a target every year...

I ran a 34x19. Placed 2nd (SS 28 mile) after dropping my chain 5 times during the race. I guess I need to pay more attention when tightening the EBB on the Rig.

Still an awesome race, and an awesome 4 days of pedalling Copper Harbor.
