And almost all of the parts on the bike are just bought from parts suppliers like Shimano, Sram etc. The manufacturer who's name is on the frame actually makes very little. So the best idea is to learn a little about the different product ranges then you can spot the better bike by looking at the parts.

It's after Christmas now so lots of shops will have bikes on sale. You'd be mad to buy a full price bike right now! You can also get very good deals buying on line. I bought my latest bike on line and saved a lot!

Another place to look is the used market. Lots of people buy bikes with good intentions then hardly use them. The bike sits in the garage for a few years then gets sold. I once found a brand new bike for a guy which cost £200 and would have been about £500 new! The best bit? He did not ride it either and sold it a few months later for £100!!!

Like buying anything, take your time and do your homework.

    Cheers,
    Colin/Mr Pig.

    Hi Fede,

There is no particular bike I would recommend. It's just a case of seeing what's available at any given time. In that price range, virtually all the bikes are made in China or Taiwan by large subcontractors so it doesn't make much sense to favour any particular brand, they're all much the same! Years ago we had two 24'' kid's bikes, one a Specialized the other a Scott. It was clear they both came out of the same factory. Most of the parts were exactly the same.
