    Coolest Maverick Name...?

Well, I'll start the ball rolling... My new Durance is called "Medusa"

    Me likes...

My old ML7 was called Iridescent, which I kinda liked, but most people thought was a little bit twee...

    So what's yours called?

And who's got the coolest name?

My Matic is named Tang - which is the stuff the astronauts used to drink in outer space. And if I want I could always add a "o" to its name and call it Tango!

    My Durance's name is "Centrifuge". I really didn't care for it, so I re-named her"Excaliber" ;
but I bet there is a real Excaliber out there!

Hahahahaha. Oh dear oh dear. Mine is named after a Greek Monster who could turn anyone to stone who looked at her, yours is named after the uber camp ex Baywatch star! Hahahaha. Sorry, very funny though... Perhaps you should sell it to a German, he's very big in Germany still I understand? Might fetch a premium cos of the name too! You could then get yourself a deal on a nice new one with a decent name

    Durance -
    aspirant [ˈæspɪrənt əˈspaɪərənt]
    n
a person who aspires, as to a high position
    adj

I guess it sums up my riding style.

    Weird name

2007 Durance called Twonka - I have no idea where that name some from, it sounds like a made-up word, perhaps it means something to the boys at Maverick?? It wouldn't be a name I would use.

Mine is called Rigsby.... Not being from North-American originally, I am not entirely sure where it comes from.... ;-) but I don't mind it.
A climb is really just a flat piece of road that points up. A headwind is a climb that you can't see. So it's all flat road, really.

I do not own a Mav frame (DUC32 & speedball, yes) but I've just gotta chime in here.

I think that the Maverick "name the frame" serial ID is fantastic. Great personal touch from a great company.

Too funny. Most, if not all, of the names listed above are great!

My ML7 is "Voyager". I really like this name & all that it implies. That bike has been passed on to my son. I replaced it with a Durance named "Shannon" . Huh, who is Shannon? Does anyone want to adopt a head badge so I can put in for a more imaginative companion collar?

Had a great ride on Repo today! I don't ride it much any more as I ride/race mostly using
29ers. I had forgotten how fun/fast this bike is.

I built it with Chris King hubs, Gold front, Red rear, XTR shifters, Thomson seatpost and stem, Avid Ti brakes.

I used bike to win Utah, Inter Mountain Bike Cup, 50+ class, back in 2004.

Great names everyone.... mine is an old skool ML7 named Acquire. Ordered in 2001, born 2/14/02. Root Beer anodized with the original CNC'ed rear shock body and Easton tubing. It has been a sweet ride for over 8 years and I am still loving it. Looking forward to adding a Durance sometime in the future.

Yours may be one of the very last bikes delivered from the first production run.

My good friend has a frame of that approximate era, named Alleycat.

About two years ago, it was ready to pull a Bluesmobile, and so was retired in favor of a Durance named Appaloosa.

I think you're right. I just now remembered a phone conversation with Frank Scurlock (now w/ Spot?) at the time I was ordering it and he did say it was the last medium frame they had. Maverick was out of the custom Psylos that shipped with those first frames so my came with a Fox Vanilla 100 which was a very good match to the 7.0 rear shock IMO. I sold the Vanilla a few years later to fund the SC32 which is still on it today. I'll get a pic or two posted sometime in the next week for anyone interested in the original frames.

ethan has cobbled parts together for me to make a 'post-maverick' ml8 - it's not here yet, and the project will take a while still ...

anyway, i got to choose the name on the headbadge - considering the 'cobbled' and 'post-maverick' aspects, i did think about frankenstein briefly (too harsh and too corny) or maybe pheonix (a bit camp), but instead i settled for:

    frankenfenix

    Astro

My ML7 (early 2002) is called "Astro".

"...Every frame we build comes with a “Serial Name” instead of a number. We poach names from sources like the writings of Tolkien and Dr. Seuss, obscure music and art, and even a few places we’ll keep to ourselves."Source: maverickbike.com

I've bought my bike two years ago in Germany and don't know it's history.
    - Perhaps it was named after Terence Wilson from the Band UB40 - stage name Astro - because of it's european selling. But its painted silver-grey!?
    - Maybe from "Astro Megaship" out of the tv-series Power Rangers in Space? (Size XL )
    - Never Mind it's based on "Astro Boy". The American title for the Japanese animated series Tetsuwan Atomu (Secret sign for Mavericks later change of production site )

Anyone knows a character from Tolkien or Dr. Suess named Astro? Maybe female

    I'll bet...

Astro was named after the dog from the cartoon series The Jetsons. Yes, I am that old.

Ah... I cracked my old ML8 frame after 7k+ miles / 11k km and I got a brand new replacement frame from Ethan a couple of months ago. He let me pick the name and called it Marsupilami from the French comics of the same name.

I had the Marsupilami painted on my old Enduro racing helmet (from when I used to race Enduro - motorcycles - competitively. That's what people who were following me saw (that helmet was retire after saving my head many times....).

    Ego - ML-7

I missed this thread somehow - shows how often I show my face round here. Anyway, my 2004 black ano ML-7 is called 'Ego' - mostly these days it's a 24-hour race bike, so it seems kind of appropriate. Still a great ride and still going fast.

My mate bought an identical frame at the same time and that was called 'Debt'.

Oh, and the bike that sold me on Mavericks originally was a Reposado that Guy Kesteven of the UK magazine Maximum Mountain Bike - I think it was Maximum - had as a long-term test bike. I borrowed it for a couple of weeks and was just blown away by how quick it was. It was called Ozzy.

After Guy had finished with it, it went back to Sideways and was converted into an ML-7 with a new shock and eBayed - still said Ozzy - REPO on the badge though. Was apparently stolen a year or so back according to a thread on STW.

My guess is after work at the Mav shop, the guys got together with the girls, they would throw down a few double IPA's at the local brew pub and then spew these sometimes cool, sometimes lame and sometimes obscure names ?

It makes perfect sense after a few beers, it is Wally Wonka's Tonka lol.
I took 'bike name theory' in collage lol actually it means 'Buffalo' in Lakota Indian

Poor "Fang" (USA-made ML7), sits in my backroom while I ride "Belladonna" (ML7.5). Still, I can't sell Fang. Too cool. Need to get it built back up for my smoother trails...with the build I have on it, it's more spritely than Bella.

If I get my ML7, I'd name it MonoLink Zeven or The Deus, Just because i'm a Dutchie and I like Deus Ex.

EDIT: Scratch that, I'm going to name it Titan or Helios, the AI's you can merge with in Deus Ex: Project 2027 and in the vanilla Deus Ex, What sounds better in your opinon guys?

Unless you are getting a custom frame from Ethan, you don't pick the name - it is etched into the headbadge at the time the frame was assembled. And older models also have the "born" date.

In essence, all Mavericks are adopted.

Some great (and some not so great) names here, I've always liked the name on my 05 ML7 which is Arachnid, seems to suit the dark n moody anodised matt black paint. Doesn't get ridden much these days but might have to get it out this wkend for a blast!

My ML7.3, born in May 2005 is called Northrop after a great aircraft manufacturer.

Appropriately, it's a real flyer and certainly gets off the ground!
