Time to start thinking about Wendell again folks. NEMBA MBAS 7/21/13

Yup, it is that time of year again. NEMBA is bringing Kona Bicycle's Mountain Bike Adventure Series back to Wendell State Forest.

The Pioneer Valley work crews have been out buffing up the trails, Superbman is busy dreaming up some awesome loops for all to enjoy, Stef has secured at least one demo fleet, and we're looking forward to seeing you all on the 21st. Wendell State Forest

If there is interest in folks making a weekend stay in the valley, I'd be glad to A: lead some rides in Charlemont and or Hawley on the afternoon of the 20th and/or B: host informal camping in the field behind the house - river access, fire pit, close to restaurants in Northampton/Amherst area, 20 minutes to Wendell in the morning.

PM me if you're interested in the Saturday options...

Liam - I can't today, and I know you're heading north for the weekend. Give me a call Sunday night we'll talk.

the Birches on the M&M are on my list for tomorrow if all goes as planned. Rumor is Liam wants us to Climb the M&M from Damon Camp Rd to Moose-Trax. I think it's a great idea, what do you think?

Gates are still locked. The trails are finally getting dried out enough to use. What a miserable early summer.

The town won't let the state reopen the gates until middle? road is repaired.

For those of you who think it is important to know how many miles the loops are: Intermediate loop measured just over 10 miles on my GPS this morning. Took three of us a very leisurely (lots of stops to chat, drink, recover, and regroup) 2 hours or so.

The expert loop will be adding 2 separate sections to the intermediate ride. The first is about 4 miles (Long ST Descent, Fire Road Climb, ST Climb), the second about 3 (All typical Wendell SingleTrack).

The beginner loop will be on the Montague side of the forest and about 7 miles - mostly double track.

Well, the weather certainly cooperated! Anyone do the full expert loop?

I think lots of folks did the whole Shebang. I led an intermediate group that skipped Hannah Mormon. Marcus led and intermediate group that skipped the Hidden Valley Loop. Matt and Aiden led an expert group that hit everything, and there were a bunch of un-led riders that did everything. Trails were really nice, tacky, relatively clear of debris, and the marking crew did a great job. Of the 120 riders, not one came back complaining of insufficient marking! I think that's a first.

Kudos to the marking crew that helped me get the loops marked - Wayne, Mark, Mike, Stef, Yvette, Matt and Ruth.

Nobody loves you for suggesting we climb the M&M... but we did it anyway with only a few complaints. I'm pretty sure that one long walk-a-bike section is no longer than the similar side hill pitch up $13 we've done the past few years.

And, I've actually seen a number of guys clear that whole climb (including your son)....

That climb was on the original loop years ago.

    120...not bad.

He didn't clear it yesterday though... I even got the birch off the middle of it so it might have been possible again, but alas... I don't think anyone cleared it yesterday.

Dam good thing this event was before last night's rain. The M&M was a brook this morning... Lots of standing water in a bunch of other places :-(
