Stow Necklace next to Summer Solstice ...

The summer solstice providing some great light ....have been in area now for a year....one of my go to rides is the Stow Necklace....lots of versions of this....today it was a ride through Pine Bluff, down Track road along the Assabet...over to Red Acre...next to Captain Sargent and the first real hill climb...then to Flagg Hill including a ride to the top and the loop trail....over to Heath Hen for a full circle...then into Stow town Forest....over the Assabet River and into Assabet National Wildlife Refuge and out to Pine Bluff Trails......a few roads to link it all up.....23+ miles today.....

Nice report with pix JeffSkisMontana. I ride these trails a lot, especially the Stow Town Forest since I live next to it. The Flagg Hill sign is actually one that I made so it is fun to see that photo. Maybe we can ride together some time. Am not on this forum much but I will keep an eye on it.

Tmhar28.......put Pine Bluff recreation area. In Stow into a GPS or Mapquest and it will give you directions from Framingham....your about a 25 minute ride away if you live on the west side of town.....trails are pretty tame but have a few fun features and climbs.....YakFish...appreciate the sign on Flagg Hill...as a new person in the area...the signs and maps are really important.....had a guy from town show me a bunch of these trails and areas....then I found some maps on the town recreation site....Ride On!

How many miles of trails in the Stowe town forest? I live a little south of this and have never ridden there. I think I will head over there this week to check it out and try to ride Mt Pisgah in Northboro again. I have not been there in a while.

Not sure of the exact miles in STF.....but it can be ridden in a figure 8 with a few extra loops in about 1.5 hours....the beauty of the riding in Stow is the ability to link up different parcels...in addition to the Stow Necklace ride I described at the beginning of thread...you can easily add in the Desert in Marlboro and Sudbury....Marble hill on the opposite side of the necklace...then Delany project....someday the Annie Moore land too!

I checked out Stow Town forest today and I rode about 7 miles in total just kind of zig zagging all throughout the property. I thought it was decent ( not awesome), I liked the scenery. Would be a good place to take beginners or kids, just have them ride the Blue double track and maybe that white trail. I climbed the big hill and bombed back down, that was kind of fun. It wasn't very technical and that's Ok sometimes. Wish it was a bit bigger. But like you said, you can add in some additional parcels and make a longer ride. I'd have to figure that out. Anyways, it's always cool to check out a new place to ride around here.

Looks like a very fun place to ride - still doing loops there in October? I'd love to catch a tour and find some more Metrowest riding. I'm also coming out of Framingham and am always looking for more good stuff nearby.

Riding the Stow Necklace Sunday....passing through Pine Bluff Recreation area at approx. 9:10am.....the Necklace ride has multiple options to shorten or extend the ride....last week it took me about 3 hours at a moderate pace.....many times I make it about a 2 hour ride...the terrain is relatively flat and smooth... there are some connections on the road that are up to 1 mile in length. Ride On!

Ok, hijacking your thread here, Jeff, so apologies in advance.

I could not ride early Sunday as I beat myself up too late at a pig roast:
    Name: 11 pig.jpg
Views: 161
Size: 12.6 KB

By late morning I was ok enough to get out for a local ride and decided on the Concord/Carlisle Necklace. I forgot to charge my phone so I did not take any pics so that I could let the phone focus on GPS'ing the ride. So other than the pig, these pics are picked off of the internet.

I began by following in the footsteps of the orginal nature boy, Henry David Thoreau, who apparently looks like Ellen:

Size: 20.3 KB

There's a cool tunnel that goes under Rt 2 that allows for wildlife to safely get under the road without getting smooshed. The Sudbury Valley Trustees have a game cam in there and it captures some cool pics:

Stow Necklace next to Summer Solstice ...-11-racoons.jpg

Next stop along the ride is Fairyland Pond. No joke, that's really the name:

Stow Necklace next to Summer Solstice ...-11-fairyland.jpg

I didn't actually see any real fairies. After crusing through Concord center I made my way into Estabrook Woods and was now following in the footsteps of the Minutemen and the Brits from the 1700's.

Stow Necklace next to Summer Solstice ...-11-brit.jpg

Really cool scenery in Estabrook and easy fast riding. The next part of the ride took me into Great Brook Farm which has got some good mtb trails. I always like seeing the No Horses signs on some of those trails.

Making my way back I was riding near Concord Carlisle High School and came across a sign stating that I was in a study area for the school's forensics class and that I should not too touch anything. Kinda cool.
Stow Necklace next to Summer Solstice ...-11-skelaton.jpg

Later I crossed under Rt 2 again and found some cool graffiti done by some local toughs:
Stow Necklace next to Summer Solstice ...-11-graffiti.jpg

Post ride, there was nobody around so I had to have a beer by myself:

Did a shorter than usual ride with 14.7 miles.....could have ridden longer as the temperature kept rising....but had a commitment .....all in all a great ride.

Trails although covered with leaves were easy to follow due to the amount of hikers, horses and bikers that have been out and about......picked up those sox at The Hot Tomato Cafe in Fruita Colorado back a few years ago....

Do you have a GPS track of your rides ? Maybe Strava? You could take a screen shot of the track and post up the map. Looks like some really nice exploring.

I would love a track of your rides too. I just started riding up in that area and I know the Assabet NWR and Crow Island, but that's about it. I would hook up with you but I'm 51y.o. and I'm sure ride much slower pace.

MilkThistle and thecanoe: No one would describe me or the rides as being fast and take plenty of stops to enjoy the scenery. Not running a GPS unit but you can search on Strava, there are plenty of riders out this way. There are lots of connections between the parks and conservation lands that are best shown in person. Come on out and ride sometime will be glad to guide. Here is a screen shot of the ride I did Saturday.

    Thanks, appreciated on all points!

I actually got up there today as well.

I left from my house, went through part of "The Desert" in Marlboro, then off to Assabet, then Red Acre, then Sargent Farm, then Flagg hill. 29.7 miles but a lot of that was on road as I wasn't too efficient at staying off the roads. At Flagg I rode up a white marked trail and then turned left on a yellow marked trail - that finally ended up in a very grassy area - and there was a marker that stated:"Boundry" - so I turned around and looked for an alternate route back and eventually ended up tangled in vines and dragging my bike around the forest. Still a blast and saw a nice little stream and a beaver dam in the process. Ended up backtracking that one after all as you can see in my pic.

Took me 4.5 hours but that included a lot of stopping trying to figure out where I was trying to go.

Saw lots of bikers on the roads today, and a group of 6 bikers (3 men and 3 women) in Red Acre that I then followed to Sargent Hill (where they dropped me). They had some super sweet rides, one was a Fat Tire of some sort. They were decked out!

Lot's left for me to explore, but I got a taste of it!

Thanks for the tips and the inspiration, maybe I'll take you up on that offer to ride as well someday.

    Eric

Here is my track from today - (Marble Hill is flagged as I have ridden that little gem previously)

I would love to do a loop with you in there. Looks beautiful. Do you ever ride during the week? I'm retired and ride with a few people that enjoy that type of exploring. Get to take in all of nature. I'm good for about 15 miles if it's a nice day and at least 40 degrees.

The Stow Necklace has lots of water along the route really making it quite scenic. There is not much climbing , the only downside is there are some short connections on rural roads. I do ride during the week but mostly after work and at this time of year it at night and it is starting to get too cold. thecanoe: Will continue to post here when the weather is good and hope you and others will join for a ride.

I would like to join in too - arthritic knees be darned!

I'm looking at the Weather Channel app right now and it shows Sunny with 0% rain this coming weekend with 45* on Saturday and 47* on Sunday. Maybe that will come true!

This morning I am going to the Desert in Marlboro (2.5 miles from my house) and going to try to link it into ARNWR like on your gps map above.

I'm staying tuned to this thread. Thanks!

Hop Brook Marsh is another nice body of water to bike around when the season has been on the dry side - very flat and pretty like the rest.

My gps track from yesterday reminded me of that place - used to walk the dogs there.

I go through Hopbrook to access the Marlboro Desert....it has great water views in there depending on time of year. Might be skiing this weekend so not sure yet on a ride....but will post up if I am going to ride instead of ski. Great to see some interest look forward to riding with you all at some point this winter.

Got out for a couple hours this afternoon after returning from skiing in Maine....Dec6 and 50d, ice on parts of the Assabet river and I am wearing shorts! Gotta be the last time to wear shorts this calendar year. Saw 5 other riders in Stow Town Forest. Late afternoon sun cast some long shadows......

I was in part of the necklace today; Marlboro desert, ARNWR, Red Acre.

Some trails were Very icy - Studs were a must. When I started at 10 am it was 32*F and when I finished at 1 pm it was 41*F. Fantastic Day!

Saw some Maynard FireFighters practicing water rescue as a bonus.

Sorry, 2nd edit on this post!

First was a crybaby post. Second was just "Oh, Well"

Now looks like I can make it if you start at 10 AM (working 3rd shift Saturday & Sunday)

I will be checking in to see when you ride!

Planning on riding the Stow Necklace (or parts of ) Sunday...starting at 10am from Pine Bluff Recreation area. Trail conditions should be excellent with the rain Friday and Saturday getting rid of some of the dust. Ride On!
There are two paths you can go by but in the long run........

I took the kids and found it hard to get around. I made it to white pond but didn't go further than the water treatment no trespassing sign. Ended up circling back and rode up white pond rd a couple miles. Great day for a ride.
