Late Winter/Early Spring 2017 Conditions Thread

I had to kill the 2016 thread. It was so 2016..

By the way, Wompatuck is great right now.

How'd you guys survive the wind last weekend? We have a blow-down bonanza on our stuff.

I'm glad I bought a six pack of 2 stroke oil this winter.

LLF is ok right now. Going to get a new Silky blade though. I'm sure my local is going to need lots of TLC.

HP had a few blowdowns last weekend. We were able to cut/remove one. I am sure the wind today isn't helping.

HP was nice yesterday (3/11). Should be interesting to see how things are after Wednesday with the storm.

How did the Cape fair with the blizzard? Snow map doesn't show much snow out that way.

i must say the riding yesterday in Boston was phenomenal. If you like sleet being pelted into your face while you try to pedal through ice and slush then I hope you didn't miss out!

it was a net zero storm. whatever fell twas then either rained away on/or then melted in the warm afternoon. so, the woods should have plenty of crusty bs, and icy spots where it's been ridden, but it should still lend itself to some pedaling.
I got shortchanged hours this week, so I'll be trying to smash em in fri, sat, Sunday.

Rode TOT last night on my fat bike. Lots of snow and ice out there still which made for a few challenging areas but southern facing trails were bone dry. I've had reports that Willow Street and Nickerson are better but there are still some icy spots. I have not gotten a first hand report of Otis but the word is that it's also pretty clear.

Late Winter/Early Spring 2017 Conditions Thread

Wompy was frozen solid this morning, with 1-2" of crunchy snow and ice that got mushy as the temps rose. Fatbikes are the weapon of choice for tomorrow. I also peeked at the trails in Duxbury on my way home, significantly less snow, more bare patches but still a lot of compacted snow which will turn soft with today/tonight's warm temps. More likely to get by on skinny tires at Dux than Wompy. Get your ride in tomorrow morning before the snow!

LLF was pretty much a shit show today. Maybe 1-2 miles of packed trail, the rest was unrideable.

Hmmmmm I think out sheer boredom and being cooped up in the house too long, I'm going to do a Wompy recon ride this morning on my 3 inch plus tires. Thanks for the trail info dirtyjack. Keep that kinda info coming.

been riding RM Friday nite and Saturday Day. most of it is ridable with low pressure fatties. you got fat? RM is open for bizness IMHO

the inner stuff is 4-ish inches deep stiff potato snow with snowshoe-wide trail, so need steering skills but surprisingly plenty of climbing grip on all but the steep grunts. 99% ride, 1% walk-a-grunt.

Once again the Cape got little to no snow from this last storm. Trails are good to go on skinny tires in pretty much all riding areas. Only ask that riders be mindful of any lingering areas of mud to avoid creating deep ruts.

Wompatuck was surprisingly rideable on Saturday with 3.0 tires. Trails are about 30% dirt and 70% thin, packed snow. Temps hovered right above freezing so the snow was quite grippy. There will be some melt this week so I'm hoping trails clear up there by the weekend.

Anyone got ride info for LLF? Hoping for a lazy lunch. Can't decide between LLF/Fatty or Minuteman/roadie. Leaning towards LLF since I just finished overhauling the road bike and don't feel like sliming it all up in road grime.

RM is up from 1% to 50% garbage now, until it freezes up in a few days. got too soft, and what was climbable is now walkies and most the ST flat parts are too mushy

Wompatuck was really good last night. Some standing water in the usual places but remarkably good in most places.

You never would of thought there was a No'Easter the day before. About 95% dry, only wet section is "High Roller" and near the bogs. Cleared a few down trees, trails running nice. Will be my go-to till BH and Wompy dry up.

Yeah, the rain isn't helping the dirt any. But, there's no snow on the ground, and the forecast has 60/70's for all of next week with sun. Hopefully a week from now the well drained trails will be ready to rock.

You'll probably have to go south and east to Plymouth/deluxbury/Otis. Some of the Freetown stuff will be ok, some of it is totally saturated like everywhere else.
But the sandy stuff I mentioned first will be prime.

Duxbury has some really awesome sandy flowy bits, and your typical footy bits, and really only 1 low area. I don't know it inside and out, but that's my general impression. Wompy might be ok, but I seem to remember there being some spots that stayed moist well.
Otis/TOT is really going to be the most primo.

I walked a bit of Wompy today. I've never seen it so wet. Probably needs a good 3 or 4 more dry days before it's rideable without doing damage.

I rode Carolina Hill yesterday. The trail that parallels Eames Way was underwater, but the rest was surprisingly good. Some standing water deep enough to dip my pedal in on the other side of 3A, but overall nice shape.

    Duxbury should be similar.

4/9 - Blue Hills - Ponkapoag loop around the pond was VERY wet. East side of Ponkapoag was in good shape. White loop around Buck Hill was in decent shape, few known areas have lots of standing water. Heard that Great Blue and Hancock areas running great.

Russell Mill to Billerica St Forest, an area b4 Carbon Force has not drained yet, in fact it is blocked from draining by construction

the usual exit from RM to Noble, the hook left on State, and State dead-end connector trail...

if you use this trail at the end of state street, it now ends in a small pond caused by the construction and you have to hoof it over a big ditch or otherwise hike a bike around the stupid construction ditch

better to keep riding from Noble on RM exit, and left/right to Bishop, and then to Empire, and up right to Old Middlesex Tpke dirt path to bypass it. then that is all dry to carbon force and kirks connector.

LLF is in typical mid-spring condition. The areas that usually have standing/running water, do. The usual soft spots are soft. The other 95% is A++ ready to rock.

Wompatuck is in great shape right now. 98% dry. The usual low, muddy spots are where they always are. The rest is fantastic, though the areas where the water ran hard are a bit scoured and bony.

Rayburn in Millbury was super buff today. Few muddy spots, but very few.

Lots of rain the past day. Looks wet for a few more days. Monday night was great in Wompatuck and the forbidden trails of Whitney. Hmmm. What places drain the fastest? Or should I just go fat biking on my home turf? The wet root grip of the 4.7" Bulldozer tires is insane at 5.5 psi.

Rode Wompatuck last night. The trails were in good shape. A bit slippery in spots. The water level is pretty high, but for the most part it is nice out there.
