Custom Quake 7.1 Build, What Do You Think?

Building up a used frame I purchased recently, it's a 2008 in Ruby rocking a Rocco rear shock. I'll replace the rear shock in a couple of months.

    Anyway, here's the build list:

Frame - 2008 Marin Quake 7.1, medium, used
RR Shock - Marzocchi Rocco TST, from factory
FR Fork - Rock Shox Totem Solo Air, 180mm, 1.5"
Headset - Cane Creek Forty, EC49, striaght
    Stem - Truvativ Holzfeller, 50mm
Handlebars - Truvativ Husselfelt World Cup Rider, 9/5 degree, 680mm
    Grips - ODI Locking, black
    Seatpost - Truvativ Holzfeller
    Saddle - DaBomb Skull, 2012
    FR/RR Brakes - Avid Code-R, 203mm front, 185mm rear
RR Derailleur - SRAM X.0, medium cage --- we'll see how this works
RR Shifter - SRAM X.0, trigger
    Cassette - SRAM PG-980, 11-34, 9-speed
    Crankset - Truvativ Descendant GXP, 36T, 170mm
Chainguide - MRP Mini G2 SL, aluminum
Chain - KMC X9SL Superlite 9, Pink Lady (THAT"S RIGHT, PINK!)
    Pedals - Shimano M545, aluminum
Wheelset - Hope hubs, Mavic Dual Duty rims, DT Swiss spokes
    Tubes - Kenda Super Duty, 2.35-2.75", 2mm
Tires - WTB Mutano Race, 2.4", DNA, kevlar
    ++ 150mm RR Axle Upgrade

As you may be able to tell I have mixed FR with DH in the hopes of having a bike I can ride down the slopes at the ski resorts around here or when I travel overseas, but I still want the bike to be compliant on the trails as well.

So with this build (call me what you want) I'm looking at a rough weight estimate of 36.4 lbs. Once I drop the rear shock for a new one I should be closer to 35 lbs. which is a mere 4 lbs. more than my cheap-o Fisher Mullet (rockin' @ 31 lbs. and it's a hardtail w/ 100mm of travel).

BTW, 98% of the parts were sourced from Pedal Shop in VA --- use Google or search the MTBR forum.

Feel free to bash the build, criticize or compliment, I am interested since there is always room for improvement.

I should have the bike built this week or next.

    Thanks for reading.

Sounds like a good project . Throw up some pics when your finished the build. I thought Mutano Race were skimpy xc tires?

The Mutanos are listed as all mountain. We'll see how they perform but int the end they are just tires and can be replaced in a jiffy.

    Pics will come once complete.

First DH ride should be in a few weeks, might swap the front tire for a 2.5.

So the bike is finished after a long delay, mostly on my part. Haven't had a chance to take it out for a good bashing but it rides, stops and shifts well which is half the battle. No Mutano on the rear, supplier only had one so I got one, no big deal really.

One more post and then the pics...you have to have 10 posts, it's always something.

Anyway, the Quake is officially ruby & black anodized now, had to replace the rear section after putting a nice dent in it via the Landcruiser's tow hitch. Thanks again to The Pedal Shop for the replacement section.

Gonna replace the Shim 545 with Crank Mallet 3s, hopefully they won't break.

Got some sweet ano pink spacers and seat clamp mounted now from Straitline.

Changed the bars out for Deity Dirty 30 in ano red.

Changed the stem out for a Easton Havoc 60mm.

Waiting on new tubes to mount the new tires (Minion 2.5 front, either Pana Fire FR 2.35 or Minion 2.35 rear).

Never gonna make 35 lbs. without a new shock, wheels, and Formula brakes. ---- One day ----

I'm thinking of balsa wood bars and seatpost. Will post photos of first ride after upgrade, they should be spectacular.

    First Trail Run EVER

Made my first trail run today, about two hours ago, with the wife...damn I'm out of shape. Mind you this is my first trail run period (of longer than 1/8 mile) in about 15 years.

Wife rode the Titus Switchblade and crashed into a tree...hehe...she's okay and of course I stopped (who else is going to cook for me ). Before the ride she asked "do I really need to where the helmet?" Yes you do.

Don't know how long it took but it was the intermediate course which I'm told is 6.5 miles...switchbacks, roots, UPHILL (kills...me), bridges but no logs or jumps (guess too many people got hurt).

The bike soaked up bumps, handled the roots, switchbacks, etc. with ease. My lungs on the other hand, different story.

So I'm thinking that I would like downhill a hell of a lot more as long as there is a lift.

Overall it's a great handling bike that hooked up well the whole way through. And even though I'm totally out of shape, the 1x9 setup was perfect, never needed another gear (though I did top out)
