are there any Works 4.0 owners out there or did anyone already have a chance to ride this bike?
Any experiences, pros and cons you could share?
Am interested to learn some details about this babe.
thx
Nick
Good to hear that you got the bike back together. I saw on your blog that you seem to have a GPS on the stem as well, what kind is it?
I have the Garmin Edge 705 and I'm rather pleased with it.
Click on the picture for some more of my Merlin on the trails
Can't afford the 705 it would be nice to have especially for the road bike as I just tape directions on my top tube when I head out on a new route. Can you get maps for trails very easily? Or is it mainly for roads?
I have the topographic map of Belgium and so far that is all I have needed
I use it for navigation offroad (following pre-defined or pre-recorded courses) and to log rides on- and offroad. I don't use the heartrate and odo facilities, for that I trust my Polar
Hi guys, sorry to jump in, but I just got finished building a Works 4.0 for my wife. Many thanks to you Big Bad Wolf, as your ride report and pics helped seal the deal. She took it out for the first ride today and loves it. It was a secret present for her 35th birthday, so I'm really happy. This thread was a big help in making the choice. Here are a couple photos.
That is a serious issue. I am surprised they did not warrant that. I'm guessing they think its the shock's fault, or user fault?
The chances of this happening are fairly slim. Its a combination of bottoming out your shock (what type was it, RP3 or RP23 ) and the rear assembly and/or rocker arm bending. What were you doing to cause such an impact?
If you let all the air out of the shock and manually compress it, there still is plenty of space between the top of the rear assembly and the seat tube. Obviously the shock stop will compress narrowing the gap even more, but nevertheless that must have been one serious drop/bump.
About correct air pressure, have you ever found a chart indicating how much pressure you should put in for your weight and/or riding style ? I haven't , its all experimenting with sag and also with rebound to tune it the way you like it . I have it on 100psi now (I weigh 70Kg) .
It could be size-specific since mine (a 17.5) doesn't touch before hitting the bottom of the shock (also a float R)
fwiw : the dent looks no threat to the frame, its titanium after all, but I fully understand your issue .
These pics are taken with the air out of the shock and someone sitting on the bike..there's still a 5-6mm gap under full compression (this is the 17.5 inch frame )
Excuses for the dirt but I haven't had time to clean it since our last ride

Hi So Cal,
are you in So Cal? I am too. In L.A.
I got my decals from calling Merlin over a year ago. They must have realized there is a market for them because now they are 40 bucks.
Guess I got lucky with the gentleman I spoke with at the time. He is no longer with the company.
I had a friend put the decals on. He knew what he was doing. I did not. Find someone knowledgeable to do it for sure!!

Thanks for the response, I'll seek help. Yes, I'm in So Cal. Redondo Beach. Perhaps I'll see you on the trails. I ride in OC, Santa Monica, and sometimes San Gabriels. How have you liked your Merlin?
hello i use with 120 mm fox fork it ´s amazing, i will recomended, i was used with 100mm but i prove to change 120 it s better, only if the climb its very hard, bat the 95% of trail they have many advantage.............and RP23 shock becouse the original fox float dident work in down, the bike change 100% with rp23...........
I'm 5'9 and my 17.5 fits me great. I think it depends on your proportions. Top tube measurement is more important than the 'seat tube' size so I'd measure a bike you have that fit and compare with merlin's dimensions. Off the cuff, I'd think a 6 footer would need an 18.75.
My existing Fox 100 fork needs replacement and I was wondering how many Works 4.0 owners have tried riding with a 120mm? I often feel like I could do with another 5-10mm of suspension but am not sure how much this is going to effect overall geometry and the impact on climbing.

I wouldn't do it. If it brings the bike up higher in front it will ruin the perfect balance.
I use a 100mm RS Reba Worldcup and have got it dialled in perfectly to match the rear suspension. This bike floats over everything

Hello I m write from Caracas, I have works 4.0 whit Fox 120 fit 2010, its amazing, better than 100mm,only a little change in geometry, nothing traumatic, the total performance its better, you will use it first, and after you will buy....I recomendet so much, bye.......
I would contact Ellsworth or post to one of the truth forums and see what they say. You could always go with something adjustable like a U-turn. I'm happy with my 100mm.

hello again, the truth the head angle is 71 and the works 4.0 is 70,3, teoricaly accept more than 100 mm, but depend each person, for me 120mm is estupendus, sometimes in CCS we up 40 or 50 degrees of inclination in a mountain (AVILA) and no problem....Today the idea of menus head angle degrees, more mm in suspension, they had change.....i had an epiphany with 70 degrees and use it 140 mm fork, almost the same degrees of 4.0, repeat is a how do you like? I recomendet, in a down single track is amazing.....the advantages its many............forgot the manual of mtb.and enjoy..........
excuse me my bad english.
