If you can't find one, why not go custom? I'm sure you can have a builder that does Ti to work on this project, especially with the switchover to 1.5. You might even be able to put a Lefty on.
Merlin Fat Ti has double-butted fat tubes. It had a msrp of $3+k when they were being produced. Today, to go custom with these kind of tubes will cost you a fortune considering standard non-butted Ti are around $2k.
I got my Extra Fat on closeout a year after they stopped producing them. I still see some on Ebay, even new old stock. You just have to be patient I guess.
I have a Large Merlin Fat Ti that I'm selling. Its a large, in great shape, with Mavic Cross Max wheels (v-brake), Shiman XTR shifters, front/rear derailure, cannondale crank. Looking for $1,300 plus shipping. Can send pics if interested. email me at tgettier@aol.com or call 703-932-8781
I have one. I upgraded it to a carbon lefty elo, disc brakes, spinergy wheels, XTR. My goal was to have carbon and Ti on the whole bike. I have it down to 24 lbs.
I still gets lots of comments and questions. I was at krankworx in whistler and all the guys in the booths wanted to look at my bike not the DH rigs. Was so funny.
I have one, Merlin Fat Beat size 19.5 (v-brake) frame with fork (Fatty) brand new. Fork rubber slighty out of shape. Let me know if you are interested and I'll get you some pictures. Coming out from Asia.
It looks like it has been awhile since the last post. I have a frankenstein like idea, so (the post) it's ALIIIVE! I would like to run 700c wheels in a Merlin Fat Ti.
Does anyone know if a 700 x 25 or even 700 x 28 wheelset will work with a Merlin Fat Ti? Of course a nice 26 x 1.5 aired up above 80psi would feel really smooth on the tarmac, but I was just wondering if anyone knows if 700c wheels work? I suspect it would work as Cannondale frames of the hardtail mountain bike variety have ample clearance. If anyone out there has a) a Merlin Fat Ti and b) a wheel with a 135mm hub and 700c rims, please see if it works.
Your problems will be with the brakes with a 700c wheel. V-brakes are not compatible. If your Fat Ti has disc brakes tab on the stays, go with a 29 wheel and 700c tires (they will fit). If none then your only option is to have disc in front provided your fork has disc tabs and V-brake at the back. Mavic also has a 700c wheelset with disc brake option. I forgot the model no. as it's been a long while.
Thank you older guy. It is exciting to know that a 29'er wheel will fit. Your insight is really helpful. I must get the disc upgrades, and I will be ready to hit the trails and the tarmac. By the way, do you know the maximum tire clearance with 29'er tires?
