Duo/Xera and some cheap-o lights - 18 hour race report

My new combo worked outstanding in this weekend's race. I rode ~4 hours at night with this set up and it was flawless. The optics work so well vs. the reflectors on both the bar (Duo) and helmet (Xera - used the spot optic vs. the stock one). I used my GMG batteries with no issues and charged after each lap. Seems the power indicator doesn't work exactly right with the GMG batteries as I went orange/red and had a lot of life left. I just blazed both on high the whole time b/c I could. Liked that I could throttle down to 90% or even 70% if I had needed and still had enough light to ride (maybe just not as fast as on 100%). I am VERY happy with my lights.

    On the cheap-o front...

One guy on our team used a SSX2 on the helmet/bar with the batteries that come with them and had no issues.

Saw lots of cheapies..the 3x clone seemed v. popular as were the 808 clones.

I let one of the other guys on my team use my Yinding - he has 808s. He loved it.

Overall, the cheapies seem to be v. popular and I didn't hear of any failures/issues giving weight to why folks buy these and seem to be getting away from the big-name lights that are so much more $$$.

You running with the named brands or raced with clones ?

I just bid won a complete set of MS MJ - 816 "Micky Mouse " clone for less than 20 bucks , I never had lights so I hope they're decent .

As I said in my OP - I rolled the Gemini setup but several of my team members have and used clones. The 816 is ok - buddy has one and it is more than adequate as a bar light just kind of big.

Great race. I set a few PRs as did other members of my team. Love the relay format..really the most fun type of race IMHO.

I think Gemini, Magicshine, etc. strike a nice balance between cost and quality for most folks.
