Will an external battery work for an all-in-one light?

I have a Light and Motion Taz1200 (LIGHT & MOTION || Taz 1200) and I love the beam, but it just doesn't last long at all. Our usual rides at a local trail are a bit over two hours and it lasts about half a ride. I have several extra Magicshine type batteries with the round connector and my question is, if I were to make an adapter cable that went from the round Magicshine battery to the micro USB on the Taz, would that give extra battery life? Thanks in advance for the help.

The USB connector on the light is for charging from a 5V source. A freshly charged MS battery is 8.4V. Approx 70% higher. I expect some magic smoke will leak from the charge circuit in the light. According to this....

Charging Batteries from USB - Application Note - Maxim

the maximum USB voltage is 5.25.

There are battery to USB chargers. I've seen them on Amazon and there have been a few threads on this forum on them.

Something like this put in the cable between the MS battery and the USB connector should do the trick:

Alrighty, thanks a bunch. I am going to get one of those step down things and make a cord to see if it works. I'll report back.

Will the Taz run while charging? My Lezyne wont.

hmm, it should last longer than that. One of my riding buddies who manages a local bike shop got one and he was having a whole load of problems with its run time. Changing to a high amp charger (like a 2A iPad or tablet charger) helped a lot, although he eventually had it exchanged by L&M. Now he gets through a 3h-4h night ride on a single charge, through judicious use of the modes.

I'd get in contact with L&M first before you start tinkering with the light, the odds are good that they'll be able to help you out.

Excellent point! Better figure this out before setting up the adapter.
